I've seen people use a push mower with a bag on it to pick up leaves, but is there a machine that is made specifically for picking up leaves?

(p.s. Don't tell me they've already made it and it is called a rake.)

It's called a Billy Goat. No, I'm not being a smart *ss. Google it. You are better off just mowing them in.

a couple of companies (toro was one) make a leaf shredding disk that goes on your lawn mower that works pretty well...

I have never seen a leaf vac that worked all that well.

You'd be better off using mulching blades if your mower can handle them. Some models say that a mulching plug on the mower outlet is needed (blades chop the grass more times), but a good set of mulching blades (like Gators) work fine by themselves - and it's better for your lawn.

I have four large oaks tht cover almost all of my front yard. I keep them trimmed however the canopy is well defined and so my St Agustine does not get full sun.

I have heard on numurous occasions that oak leaves are very acidic, and they should not be muched into the grass, expecially where this is no full sun to help them break down.

What say ye ags?

Ask the Agronomist(TM) says .....
Funny stuff. In 80% of the state, the soil can use some acidification. In the other 20% the added organic material will far outweigh any acidification.

I have a very large mature live oak that basically shades 3/4 of my front yard. The shredded leaves build up with the thatch and can make the growth spotty, so sometimes I shred, sometimes I bag. The shallow, widespread oak roots also compete for nutrients, and for some reason, the soil always seems to get sandy under live oaks over time. Between all that and the shade, the St Augustine does have a tough time, but water and proper fertilizer can keep it growing.

My parents have one of these and they really love it. Say it works pretty well.

Depending on how much you've got to clear my leaf blower also has a vacuum/bag set up. You just remove the guard from the air-intake/vacuum side and snap on a vacuum nozzle and then attach a collection bag where the blower nozzle usually goes.

I rake mine into piles and then use the blower/vac to mulch them. You can bag the mulch or use it for flower bed cover, but it cuts down the number of bags by a factor of 5x+. A guy on Ebay sells a HUGE vac bag that holds several bushels. It's supposed to work well and save lots of time.

I had a craftsman lawn vac that worked great. It had a big pickup vac in the front and an attached hose for working in flowerbeds and corners. It was freaking awesome. It saved me so much time.

My trees were all live oaks and elm trees. I don't think it would work as well on trees with huge leaves like magnolia.
