I lost a Mimosa tree several years ago to what appeared to be Mimosa wilt. Clssic symptoms. Now I have another large Mimosa that has contracted it. My question is I have one healthy one left. What can I do to protect this one. Also, I like Mimosa trees, what are the chances if I plant more, that they will come up with it?

Can't help with the wilt question, but I always call them Dr. Seuss trees. Because they look like something out of a Dr. Seuss book...

WOW. And to think the cussing I'd give each and every one 'caused they just refused to die when cut down. Sprout suckers from the stump. Had to take a spade bit on a cordless drill, drill hole in stump and pour in Roundup.

It can be a nice ornamental but most people don't like them. The wilt you are talking about is called Vascular Wilt. It turns the leaves yellow and it will ooze a frothy liquid from cracks. Vascular Wilt is a fungus in the soil that invades the root system. If you use a balance fertilizer it will help a 10-10-10. Don't ever use a high nitrogen one. Also your tree should be watered alot to decrease symptoms and any dead limbs should be removed and burned. Another type of tree that works better is the Honey Locust it is resistant to vascular wilt.

Just be sure to get thornless Honey Locust. The natives are vicious!

I just helped a lady plant some Lacey Oaks and she was very happy with the way the tree will look. I took out a arizona ash that was getting ready to split out and be a problem. One of the worst trees to have.

Besides a Lacey Oak, what are some other semi fast growing trees that one could put in a yard in central texas. I already have 4 huge, several hundred year old live oaks and some palm trees around my pool. I also have a friggin huge pecan tree.

el presidente,

The Lacebark (Chinese) Elm was recommended to me numerous times when I asked about a semi-fast growing "good" tree. We planted one in November in our back yard so no real exprerience yet as far as growth but I like the look of mature ones I have seen around town.

I actually really like Ash trees. I have 2 Arizona Ash and 1 Texas Ash. Fast growing and GREAT shade trees. As long as you trim them they can develop a really nice canopy.

el Presidente, try the Chinese Pistachio tree. It works very well in the Texas climate and requires very little mainenance.

I joined the Arbor Day Foundation and this week they sent me 10 free trees to plant. Unfortunately, I have no idea what any of them are, they're just sticks & roots right now. Most of them are planted in buckets for the time being.
