What extraordinary uses have you heard of for DMSO?

DMSO (Dimethyl sulfoxide) was originally found to be useful as a treatment for equine athletes with muscle ailments.

Its effectivness in horse barns quickly attracted the attention of others, and like many horse linaments in early years, it quickly jumped the specie barrier into the human medicine cabinet (Like Absorbine, Dr. Tichnor's Ointment, etc.)

I understand now that DMSO is no longer just a topical rub but has applications in an injectable form for both animals and humanoids.

It has a truly amazing list of anecdotal claims of superior restorative, healing and and preventive powers ... most of which the science community lays no claim to.

The only drawback to DMSO that I have heard about is that it leaves ones breath (quadraped or biped) smelling like the sewers of Saigon.

What has been your experience with different applications of DMSO?

It is commonly used intraveniously in horses to treat neurological issues. Every time there was a horse on the DMSO, the ENTIRE hospital reeked of it.

I have also used it to treat abcesses and draining wounds.

Long term exposure, such as treating arthritis, in humans to DMSO causes glaucoma. Wear Gloves. The solvent in WD40 is DSMO.

I am not making any judgement on the efficacy of DMSO as a treatment for any ailment because I have no direct experience with it. My only observations have involved its use and apparent benefits to problematic muscles and joints of race horses.

But I have casually followed its application over the years for a growing number of ailments in both animals and humans, enough to keep my interest alive. Testimonials notwithstanding, FDA seems reluctant to give it serious consideration.

The abstract linked below seems to elevate DMSO to the order of a "new" wonder drug, comparable to the multi-use wonder Aspirin. Is this possible?

Is DMSO the substance that allows other materials to enter your body?

quote:
The first quality that struck Dr. Jacob about the drug was its ability to pass through membranes, an ability that has been verified by numerous subsequent researchers.1 DMSO's ability to do this varies proportionally with its strength--up to a 90 percent solution. From 70 percent to 90 percent has been found to be the most effective strength across the skin, and, oddly, performance drops with concentrations higher than 90 percent. Lower concentrations are sufficient to cross other membranes. Thus, 15 percent DMSO will easily penetrate the bladder.2

In addition, DMSO can carry other drugs with it across membranes. It is more successful ferrying some drugs, such as morphine sulfate, penicillin, steroids, and cortisone, than others, such as insulin.

That's why it can be dangerous I think. It can carry potential posions into your body through the skin.

Becareful using it without knowing what you're doing.

My uncle was a cop in Houston (long retired, now) and I remember my grandfather using DMSO for something (arthritis, maybe) and my dad and uncle were talking about how it penetrates the skin and can carry other stuff along with it. Uncle said he had (seen or heard) about "hippies" using it in spray bottles with LSD and trying to spray it on cops to get them tripping.

It's used for preservation of tissue samples. Nasty stuff. As mentioned, it always lets other stuff enter your body. If you handle it, then handle gasoline. Gasoline enters the body.

It's a chic way to do heroin, meth, or other drugs.

I've used it to aid in recovery in horses who have had an EIPH (Exercise Induced Pulmonary Hemorrhage). They seem to bounce back better, get back to training sooner, and maybe reduce recurrence, haven't decided that yet. Have administered both iv, and in their water.

I've seen it used for lots of things. Even some bad. Someone said earlier that it can be used therapeutically for founder (laminitis), but I've seen it founder a horse when mixed with dexamethasone and painted on a horse's sore shins. Granted it was the dex that foundered the horse, but it was the dmso that pushed it. Useful, but to be taken with thought.
