Ok, I hear all about it (and maybe have even experienced it), but when I read about a "creepy trigger" I don't really know what they mean. Can someone explain?

Thanks.

It's basically the distance you pull the trigger before the intended effect of firing the weapon.

While the actual distance is measurable in 100th's of an inch the perceived distance on some creepy triggers is unacceptable to the user. Creepy triggers can have a negative effect on accuracy.

'Creep' is any play that the trigger has before or after it drops the pin. Most people complain about the creep before a trigger goes, because it causes them to feel movement and not know exact timing. Most good aftermarket triggers will have a consistent pull weight, and no creep. The poundage you pull is the poundage you pull - no movement before or after.

Ok, that explains it. It's not a function of how smooth the pull but the distance you have to pull the trigger. Right?

My current rifle has a lot of "slack" in the pull (my definition for how long I pull on the trigger before it fires) by my approximation, although the pull is fairly light and smooth. So that would indicate I have a lot of "creep", I guess.

Correct. If you can 'wiggle' the trigger back and forth without the pin dropping, you have a 'creepy' trigger.

A trigger can have a heavy pull weight - like 7 or 8 lbs, but still have no creep. And the opposite is the same. A trigger with low pull - 1 lb or less - can have creep. Pull weight and creep are two diff. things. Took me a while to get it straight in my head.

Yeah, lostboy, I'm in the latter. I have a low pull weight but it's creepy.

One positive about having a longer pull is that I am always surprised when it breaks, which helps me minimize flinching.

Creep is not always a bad thing. I had a buddy with a hair trigger (sub lb) with no creep (aka travel) and it was scary to shoot. you could just blow on it and it would go off.

i like a little travel in my triggers. That way I can get set and get comfortable on the trigger without having to worry about it going off. the key for me is a crisp drop. i want to be smooth up till it hits the wall then, BANG.

Guess I'm the total opposite. I spend a lot of time behind the trigger from the comforts of my couch - dry fire over and over so that trigger pull is ingrained into my finger and mind. Creep drives me nuts!

SR - is your trigger aftermarket or the factory trigger?

lost boy,

the dry fire, and live fire trigger snaps seem different to me on my XD.

My CZ .375H&H has quite a bit of creep. In fact, your can hear creaking in the trigger when "taking up the slack." But, I dont mind it. My pull weight is 3 lbs but when the set trigger is engaged its 14oz.

lostboy, I have a factory trigger that I took to a gunsmith. It was originally an extremely heavy pull, and now it's down to a manageable weight. It's about a 3. Not a hair trigger, but still fairly light--at least compared to what it was. I would like the pull shortened a bit, though.

The gun in question is a .30-06 Browning Automatic, and as an automatic I don't want it too sensitive.

I used to have the same rifle in 7mm Mag and I know what you mean about the trigger. Mine had a fair amount of creep and was a little heavy. My new rifle has little to no creep and (supposedly) a 3-4 lb trigger pull. It's very nice compared to my old BAR. I think you'd be happy with having a gunsmith adjust the trigger as you described above.
