Well, we had a decent hunt this morning. My lab brings back a mourning dove and I notice this shine of silver and it was a banded dove! So I promtly pull out my other birds and I also had a banded whitewing. Two banded birds in one day! These are the first banded birds I've shot. ALready called them in this morning.

That is sweet!! Chances of that happening again can't be very good.

Congrats, that is way awesome! As lame as it might sound, I would probably get a banded dove mounted. (Assuming it still has its head)

What's the big deal with banded birds? Is it just the novelty of getting one?

Yes, it is a novelty, but they also have bands worth money out there. I'm not sure what the figures are, but I would think the percentage of hunters that actually kill a banded duck, goose or dove is very small.

What area were you in? We banded a bunch of white-wings (and some mourning) this year. Most of the white-wings were actually banded in urban areas.

This year TPWD banded nearly 10,000 white-wings. It's interesting seeing where all they end up being found.

Additionally, this year distance point counts were conducted in all the major urban areas across the state. Yeah, those were good times (extremely sarcastic).

We were just north of Creedmoor (near Buda). From what I read most dove bands were recovered within 60 miles of where they were banded. I hope that whitewing came out of Austin so that I don't get as frustrated watching thousands of them fly over in town. I did think about getting them mounted, but my lab has a habit of removing tailfeathers. May still do it with some stand-ins.

You are the luckiest SOB ever! I have killed literally thousands of dove and alot of ducks and geese and have NEVER killed a single banded bird. Congrats, and call in to find out the specifics on them.

The area directly around Buda had a quota of about 70, between Austin/Round Rock there was about 620 wwd, and San Antonio chipped in ~700 (I think they may have actually gotten more than that).

I shot a Banded whitewing this afternoon hunting over a tank in West Texas. First one of my lifetime. Really Excited.

I know I'm lucky, i should have gone and bought one of those big time hunt chances. This is something I can scratch off my 'bucket list', and I know the chances of me doing it again are probably pretty low. I'll let y'all know when I get the banding info. They said it would be 2-4 weeks. Ursus, thanks for the info. It'll be interesting to see which area the birds came from.

I wish everyone was this excited about calling in banded birds!

There are a lot of hunters that won't call them in because they think the state will take the bird/band from them or something.
