I was born and raised in Hondo and my parents still live there. There aren't any places to hang out and watch the game.
As for restaurants:
Mexican: Azteca (my personal favorite). If you're on Hwy 90, turn North and go over the train tracks at Ave K. The city library will be on the southside of Hwy 90. It will be one block north on your left.
Villa's. A hidden little hole in the wall that's open late and only on weekends. To get there turn North at Ave U from Hwy 90(Lyssy and Eckel feeds will be on the southside of Hwy 90...go say hi to my dad at L&E)
El Rodeo del Jalisco. My family members are Azteca loyalists, but El Rodeo has good breakfast tacos. It's on the corner of Ave E and Hwy 90. Parking lot gets crowded easily.
For other breakfast tacos, the Shell Station at Ave M (FM 462) and Hwy 90 also has tacos. They're not too bad and they're open at 6:00. There is also Margie's in Castroville and they open at 4:00. It's a bright orange tin building on Hwy 90.
BBQ: McBee's. It's on Hwy 90 about one block West of Ave M. There is also Backyard BBQ behind Billy Bob's burgers, but I have never eaten there so I have no opinion.
Burgers: Billy Bob's are by the far the best in town. Hermann Son's serves up a good burger too, but Billy Bob's are much better. And they have sweet tea with free refills if you eat there.
Steaks: Hermann Son's. At the intersection of Hwy 90 and 173 (Southeast corner). If you go on any dove hunting weekend, it's going to be packed. Brice runs a great restaurant and his staff works their tales off, but there will be a wait and it will probably be long. Ask about getting a beer while you wait. They have great onion rings for an appetizer too.
Bill and Rosa's. This little restaurant in in D'Hanis (about 9 miles West of Hondo) and is also located on Hwy 90. D'Hanis doesn't have a stop light, but it's on the North side of the tracks. You can't miss it.
If I think of anything else, I'll post again.
