I've been to the walmart there a few times, but that's about it. You might drive to Castroville. They have a couple of places there that serve up authentic German food.

There is a little joint at 90 and 173 that you can not miss as you are driving into hondo.

Fills up with hunters on opening weekend. Great place to eat.

90 and 173 is that the steak house? Herman Brothers I think we use to eat there on the way back from Bracketville. It's a great place, and if I did get the name wrong you can't miss it, it is right off of 90 headed back to San Antonio.

*I can't remember the name of it, but there is an Alsatian place by St. Louis Catholic Church
*Cora's (3 mi north of US 90 on FM 471)
*Haby's Bakery for breakfast

Devine

*Get a beer to go, and see if you can find the Bad to the Bone BBQ team cooking somewhere

Yancey

*Nothing really. I just like to mention it because that is where I will be...

Hermann Sons to eat and have some drinks but you better not be counting on a place to watch college football because there isn't really a place in Hondo for that kind of thing.

Hermann Sons in Hondo.
Bill and Rosa's in D'Hanis. Bill and Rosa's is actually a little better (blasphemy, I know).
El Rodeo de Jalisco is good Mexican food.

Trust me. I lived/worked in the area for 14 years.

Nobody replied about a "place to watch some football". That's because in these small towns you have to find a beer joint with a big screen TV.

In the middle of Castroville, on Hwy 90, there is a BBQ joint called "Pit Stop" (okay but I am not recommending). Right behind the Pit Stop is a beer joint and I think it is called "The Garage" or something like that. It is part of the same building as Pit Stop. It is big, old, has TV and is kinda like the Dixie Chicken only bigger. They even have wrestling matches there occasionally. Trust me, it is as safe as these places get. (I live in the area.)

If that's not good enough, I can direct you to the nearest Chilis or Buffalo Bills Wild Wings on the west side of SA.

ttt...just drove by and it is called "The Garage" but the sign is small.

You can go into the "Pit Stop" in front, and there are some double saloon type doors in the back of Pit Stop that go right into The Garage. You only need about 2 Aggie buds to have a majority over the couple of Tshirt sips that hang out there.

Is Cora's enjoyable again?

I remember years ago (maybe 20 yrs ago or so) their nachos were incredible. I think the owner's name was Dale. If I remember he passed away and whoever took over just could not get things "right."

So, is Cors's back on the "not to be missed list?"

SA Ag 91...

no

I live 3 miles away from Cora's. I also grew up in the same area. I knew the original Cora and also knew Dale Wolf who bought the place from Cora. My wife and I could tell when they started changing the recipes, and using microwaves way too much.

That said, there is still a "cult" going there...pretty good crowds, and lots of hunters and people coming off Medina Lake in evenings. They must be enjoying it, but it is nothing like it used to be.

They really messed it up when they straightened up the crooked floors and crooked booth benches. That was part of the charm.

Cora never messed up nachos.
Dale never messed up fried chicken
Cant say the same now.

Bad dove hunting experience in Hondo. I wish I remembered the man's name we leased from but his place was northeast of town. He lied to us.

I was born and raised in Hondo and my parents still live there. There aren't any places to hang out and watch the game.

As for restaurants:

Mexican: Azteca (my personal favorite). If you're on Hwy 90, turn North and go over the train tracks at Ave K. The city library will be on the southside of Hwy 90. It will be one block north on your left.

Villa's. A hidden little hole in the wall that's open late and only on weekends. To get there turn North at Ave U from Hwy 90(Lyssy and Eckel feeds will be on the southside of Hwy 90...go say hi to my dad at L&E)

El Rodeo del Jalisco. My family members are Azteca loyalists, but El Rodeo has good breakfast tacos. It's on the corner of Ave E and Hwy 90. Parking lot gets crowded easily.

For other breakfast tacos, the Shell Station at Ave M (FM 462) and Hwy 90 also has tacos. They're not too bad and they're open at 6:00. There is also Margie's in Castroville and they open at 4:00. It's a bright orange tin building on Hwy 90.

BBQ: McBee's. It's on Hwy 90 about one block West of Ave M. There is also Backyard BBQ behind Billy Bob's burgers, but I have never eaten there so I have no opinion.

Burgers: Billy Bob's are by the far the best in town. Hermann Son's serves up a good burger too, but Billy Bob's are much better. And they have sweet tea with free refills if you eat there.

Steaks: Hermann Son's. At the intersection of Hwy 90 and 173 (Southeast corner). If you go on any dove hunting weekend, it's going to be packed. Brice runs a great restaurant and his staff works their tales off, but there will be a wait and it will probably be long. Ask about getting a beer while you wait. They have great onion rings for an appetizer too.

Bill and Rosa's. This little restaurant in in D'Hanis (about 9 miles West of Hondo) and is also located on Hwy 90. D'Hanis doesn't have a stop light, but it's on the North side of the tracks. You can't miss it.

If I think of anything else, I'll post again.

Maverick, have you had the ranchero chicken fried steak from Azteca? If not, then STFU.
Maverick06
How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm from the area so I have tried it and it is good. I just wanted to give you a hard time! I've heard that Azteca is no longer "tip free". My grandpa loved going there because he didn't have to tip the waitresses! I knew you were from Hondo and I have been racking my brain trying to figure out who you are but I'm not having much luck.

If we're going by class year (and assuming you're class of '06), then I'm 5 years older than you. I'm female, showed steers and my dad was the county extension agent and my mom was a teacher at the high school. That should help.
