public waters more than likely includes bodies of water that are fed be public tributaries. i'd consider the drive to anahuac.

I don't think that lake is truly public, per say.

It's a little farther then the Woodlands but duck hunting is allowed on the Northern part of Lake Conroe that borders the Sam Houston National Forest.

You can order a pretty good map of the area here.

i hope you don't hunt that area, or anyone else that sees your post, cause putting info out there like you did just makes public hunting that much more crowded.

Maybe I misread your post, but in these days where hunting is on the decline because people can't afford the cost, I encourage people to share hunting oppurtunities...especially close and free oppurtunities.

As for the original post, I second Lake Conroe and the Anahuac National Wildlife Refuge, as well as The Trinity River National Wildlife Refuge (when and if permitted) Galveston bay complex. The Sam Houston National Forest is nearby as well as several other backwater locations on nearby rivers such as the Brazos and San Jacinto.

well, to me, scouting is 90% the sport in hunting, so i encourage people to do that on their own.

I agree that why I didn't tell him where to go exactly.

It was crowded last year, it will be crowded this year. Maybe the one or two extra folks who show up because of my post will be the ones that push the TPWD to open up some more public hunting land.

What about hunting from a boat? As far as I understand it, most creeks, lakes, etc. are legal to hunt from boats as long as you can get to it from public access without leaving your boat. Does anyone have any insight on this, because I had contemplated buying a little kayak or canoe to hunt and fish from.

I believe on Lake Conroe you can't hunt from a boat but I'm not 100% sure.

As far as streams go there was a thread about 6 months ago that discussed duck hunting on streams. I actually talked to the Game Warden in Brazos county and was told that you can hunt from a canoe on a stream but you can't shoot onto private land. He also said that you can't shoot from a moving canoe, you have to be anchored. I think this is a grey area so if you go that route you might want to talk to the local game warden before you go.
