Anybody here have any experience tearing one of these completely down for cleaning?

I have a 7mm BAR Mark II Safari that I got new in 1999. I've always cleaned the gun after I've shot it but I've never stripped it completely down. I'd like to give it a good cleaning before this fall but I've heard that it's somewhat difficult to strip and re-assemble. I picked up the service manual off Midwests Gunwork's website and I also bought a teardown guide from Gander Mountain. I'm certainly no gunsmith but I'm fairly compentent wrenchin' on things. Just wanted to see what I'm getting into before I dive into the deep end.

Good question. I have two in .270 (family guns) and have never torn them down either.

I'd like to do the same, but will probbaly take them to a gunsmith.

Glad you specified... I nearly got an erection thinking about a real BAR.

Here is a link to view/print the owner's manual.

I have one and it rarely gets that dirty to completely disassemble. The manual will show how to remove the trigger group which is probably all you need.

Thanks mark. I was wondering if I could get to everything I need by just pulling the trigger group. I haven't used it in a couple years and I've noticed a couple rust spots on the receiver (hunted in the rain a couple times) so I just want to make sure everything's O.K. on the inside.

Well, the manual also shows how to clean under the forearm which includes the gas assembly.

I'm not that brave ... and ... I'm not that smart. But you might be able to tackle it.

I think once you get the forearm off, you should be able to tell if it needs a deep cleaning.

UPDATE: I got tired of working on research last night so I worked on my BAR rifle while I watched the election returns.

Disassembling the rifle was actually pretty straightforward if you follow the instructions in the owner's manual (imagine that). I removed the forend, slider bars, and trigger group and was able to clean pretty much everything. I didn't not strip the gas assembly because it didn't look dirty.

If you have any mechanical ability you shouldn't have any trouble stripping the rifle. One thing to pay close attention to before you remove it is the bolt release lever spring. When I reassebled the rifle I had to think a bit before I was able to reinstall it correctly.
