Have you guys had any problems with cattle eating protein that you've put out for deer, whether it be from a feeder or range cubes or even in a trough? We are going to start feeding protein next month, and I know our landowner is going to put a few (10-20) cattle on our place. We don't have pens around our feeders, so I don't want to waste money on protein if the bovines are just going to gobble it up.

You will need pens. They have a hard time picking up the kernels and pellets from the ground, but will clean your troughs out. If anything, they will stand there and lick where the feed comes out.

if they can get to it, it's "their" corn.

Years ago our family used to hang a bucket of corn from a limb with a 1-1/2" wide slot cut in the side at the bottom for the deer to eat. (This was before automatic deer feeders were so easy to build or buy.) Once I put protein pellets in one of those buckets. The cows trying to lick it made a slurry somewhat like masonry and plugged up the hole. It was funny when I figured out what happened.

Thanks for the info. We will be feeding six feeders on 425 acres, so hopefully 10-20 cattle won't hit all of them at one time, but I know they will snatch up whatever they can.

We'll just have to feed as much protein as possible before our landowner puts the cattle in.

electric feeders are like dinner bells to cattle

Not to mention that they think it's great fun to knock over feeders, bend the legs all to hell and disembowel timers.

Cajun...Don`t be cheap...Put pens around your feeders...

It`s more expensive and time consuming if you don`t...Trust me...

I don't think money will be an issue. It's just the time involved to put them in.

It may also be the case that the rancher will keep the cattle in a section of the lease where they are contained and will only affect one of the six stands.

Any bovine that can get to the feeder will absolutely eat it---and enjoy it !! I have got cattle, and we put up the hog panels around every feeder...my cattle are basically angus crosses, but I had a few Beefmaster cows and a Beefmaster bull, and everyone of those types jumped the hog panels--got rid of those. In short, IF the cattle have any Brahma blood--even the hog panels may not be enough.

This is the other reason we have all ours inside fenced in patches.

Adnd I'm planning on fencing in my feeders on my S Tex lease as well.

Ahh......Just put out protein starting yesterday!!...With the year we had last year, if we can just get some rain and the protein, it should be another great year in 08.

Ya, and any Cow will be drawn to any grain, and like many deer, the ding-ding of a feeder is the dinner bell going off.

4by4 panels are a must
