I'm headed to Tennessee this weekend (Hardeman County for those who care) and will more than likely bring home a nice buck. My thought is that the deer season in TX is closed - so can I bring a deer across state lines to a processor and convince him that I did not poach it? Anyone know? Thanx -

You have to have proof of sex when transporting deer in Texas. That means keeping the head with tag with the meat until it reaches its final destination(processor, your freezer etc.). I figure as long you have the tag/license from tenneessee and proof of sex you should be alright. I think...

No it isn't. It lasts at least 2 weeks into January in S. TX.

And one more weekend for youth. Saturday and Sunday, January 19-20.

Then there are 2 more weeks for doe and spike so basically there is another month left for some of us.

I always hear this and assume it to be true (I've never actually read it or even looked for it). Why have I never been questioned? Ran into game wardens with quartered up deer and no proof of sex and never been questioned. I have never had anyone at a processor ask for proof, only a tag or permit.

A person transporting a deer in Texas can have a statement from the landowner or landowner's agent identifying the sex of the deer being transported in lieu of body parts. The carcass must be properly tagged in addition to the statement. Take the time to read the outdoor annual published by TPWD.

No thank you I believe I stated above that I basically had no desire to do so. You apparently missed my point. "Why haven't the freaking game wardens ever given a s**t if that is the law/ rule"?

MasterAggie, merry Christmas

Notice: It is unlawful to possess a deer, pronghorn antelope, pheasant, or turkey (turkey taken in a county where the bag composition is restricted to gobblers and/or bearded hens or taken during any spring turkey season) with proof of sex removed. The following is considered proof of sex and must accompany the carcass until it reaches its final destination and is finally processed:

+the head (skinned or unskinned) of a buck deer with antlers attached;
+the head (skinned or unskinned) of an antlerless deer;
+the unskinned head of a pronghorn antelope;
one leg, including the spur, attached to the pheasant carcass or the entire plumage attached to the pheasant carcass;
Eastern gobblers - Turkey Special Regulations
for turkeys in counties where the bag composition is restricted to gobblers and/or bearded hens, a male turkey is required to have one leg, including the spur, attached to the bird; or the bird, accompanied by a patch of skin with breast feathers and beard attached. A female turkey taken during the fall season must be accompanied by a patch of skin with breast feathers and beard attached.
EXCEPTION: Instead of proof of sex, the hunter may obtain a receipt from a taxidermist or a signed statement from the landowner or the landowner's agent containing the following information:

Name of person who killed the wildlife resource;
Date the wildlife resource was killed; and
One of the following, as applicable: whether the deer was antlered or antlerless; the sex of the antelope; the sex of the turkey and whether a beard was attached; or the sex of the pheasant.

Funny you should mention this, back in November I got to watch several guys get tickets for this very offense. As I was checking age, weight and antlers, the GW was checking for proof of sex. Several guys tried to say it was BS, he simply showed them the Outdoor Annual, pretty dang hard to miss.

Yeah I understand that but my question is why I've never been questioned when I've said the deer was doe or buck and had NO proof of sex and the GW never gave me any crap. Is it because I can be considered "the landowners agent" therefore my word is as good as a letter from myself. I'm not arguing about the regulation just saying that game warden has looke din the cooler, seen quarters, looked at my tag, shook hands, not given me crap. That has happened on numerous occasions.

I have never tried to bring a carcass intact back but it would be a pain to leave the head and antlers attached and keep meat cold. I guide in Montana where proof of sex means split the scrotum and leave it, one testical, and a small patch of skin attached to each rear quarter. Easy to do and you can get your quartered game in a cooler.
