I've got a Bushmaster 20in. A3 that I'd like to get a scope for and I was wondering if any of you had any experience with Warne quick detach scope rings? They claim "return to zero" but I'm skeptical. I love to shoot my AR with iron sights but I'd love to be able to slap a scope on her for certain situations. Are there any other brands of quick detach "return to zero" scope rings that I should look at or are the Warne's sufficient?

Warne quick detach are an excellent choice. I ave a pair on each of my AR's and wouldn't trade them.As long as you know where to put them back on the rail, they will return to zero. They are rock solid. And yes, I have taken the scopes off both to try other optics and they stayed sighted exactly where they were previously.

There are other excellent brands also, but I am well pleased with Warne

+1 on QD rings. I don't have Warne, but the ones I have work just fine.

LaRue Tactical is the way to go. They are kind of expensive buy IMO the mount is one of the best ones out there.

OUCH! $195 for the LaRue? A little more than I wanted to spend. If you say the Warne's are fine then I'll probably get them. I found some for around $45. I also saw that Leupold makes a set too for about $53. By studying them, it looks like the Warne and Leupold have the exact same locking mechanism. But I think the Leupold's look a little more like a conventional scope ring with the clamping screws on the side, not the top like the Warne. I think that LaRue mount would put my scope too high. I like a low scope mount. Thanks for the input.

You need a high mount with an AR, due to the inline geometrty of the rifle. Rest assured, the Larue mounts are machined to perfect specs. Otherwise our warfighters wouldn't be using them enmass.

What mounts would be best with a carry handle mounted scope? Also, any Type III (see AR15.com: http://www.ar15.com/forums/topic.html?b=3&f=18&t=346233) scopes that you could suggest for under $300 would be nice.

I know, I'm cheap.

Naaaa. Not at all. You'd actually be surprised how high you can mount a scope on an AR and have zero problems.

Actually, Warne makes the QD's specifically for the AR platform. They are extra high, which is needed imo. The Warne AR QD's run around $80 if I remember correctly

Yeah, I got to thinking this morning when I pulled my AR out and looked at it that a lower type scope ring might not fit with the charging handle possibly getting in the way. I don't know if I necessarily need the "extra high" rings but I don't think a "low" style would work. Do any of you have pictures of your A3's with scopes mounted using the Warne's "high","extra high", or using the LaRue style mount. I'm looking to put a Nikon 6-18X 40/44mm type/size scope on it. On all of my other rifles, I like the lowest profile scope rings I can get by with, they just feel and look better. I know the AR is a different animal than a regular bolt action rifle and I'd like to be able to use the charging handle without having to put some kind of awkward grip on it because a scope is in the way.

The tactical latch makes life much easier with large scope. I have one installed here but you can't see it.

This is using a riser and 1/2" mounts. I need to revamp this setup.

Here's one with a set of ultra high 1" Warnes:

Here's another of High Warnes on top of a scout rail:

Thanks deats and str8shot.

Could I bother either one of you for one more question? Could one of yall give me some sort of measurement from the top of the picatanny rail (flat top of gun) to the center of the scope ring on the high rings and even the extra high if you don't mind? I'm going to measure on my gun from the top of the rail to the center of my rear sight. I figure if I can get the right rings, to match the height of the center of the scope to the height of the center of my rear peep, without interfering with the charging handle, than I ought to be good to go. I like the way an AR feels with the iron sights, I'd like to mount a scope on it and be just as comfortable with the way it feels. I have a feeling the "high" QD Warne's will be the ticket just by looking at yall's guns with the way the scopes sit on them with the extra risers/rails attached.

You wont want your scope as low as the iron sights. The glass requires a a bit more height for you to get proper relief on the exit pupil.
