I recently came back home, and I can't get my desktop with Vista on it to connect to my family's router. It worked just fine with my router and connection in my apartment, but now I can't do anything to get it working.

Can someone help me get this working?

The Vista network troubleshooter is very good at diagnosing network problems. Have you tried it?

It's a wired connection. I've gone through everything Vista has to offer, but it hasn't been able to diagnose the problem.

From reading on the internet, I believe Vista has issues with WRTP54G and other similar Linksys routers.

Go to a command line and type the following command:

netsh winsock reset

See if that works.

Is it truly a WRTP54G for Vonage or just a WRT54G (the most common wireless router I know of)?

It's the one for Vonage.

Tried netsh winsock reset and restarted. Still couldn't access the router. I plugged in my router that I used with my desktop in my apartment, and it still works fine. It is a WRT54GC. I think the Vonage one must be really picky.

I'm only here for another week, and I just need my desktop on the network so I can transfer some music. Hopefully when I install Vista on this laptop, it connects fine.

Very weird. I assume you have powered off the router (10 secs) and powered it on?

A wired ethernet connection is just about the easiest network thing to get working. The winsock reset is about the only network problem I have found that Vista can't itself fix.

Yah, I've never had a problem with a wired connection. Just plug it in and start playing as long as drivers are installed.
