Curious on the Nerdery's position on these:

• Do you have some?
• Do you actively use them?
• What is the most common use case?
• Do you ever have issues with people asking about privacy?
• Do you use them at work? Does your employer have issue with you using them?

I feel like these are becoming bigger and bigger in terms of actual usage, and I wonder what the actual use of these are for everyday items (work, life, etc.).

I worry for now they are more of a novelty than anything else.

Privacy issues keep them hamstringed enough that no one wants to go full bore into investing in the platform/infrastructure and R&D.

In a world where everyone consented (surrendered) to being recorded by all people at all times as well as having their personal profile cataloged for public consumption, they would be as common as a cell phone is now.

But we're not there (yet). Once people surrender that privacy (which is inevitable at this point), you'll see them explode in popularity.

Yeah. I think they make anyone in a social setting a little uncomfortable. We have used them to make some hands on training videos for some skilled trades and the pov perspective was excellent. Way easier than a GoPro mounted to the chest or hard hat.

That's basically where we are at as a society right now, but as we've seen over the last few decades -- all it takes is a few killer apps that people don't want to be the odd man out on for them to jettison their privacy concerns.

I think it was Nilay Patel who always says that the killer app for google glass is a facebook like face recognition that could immediately tell you people you've previously met name, summary, notes... But an app such as that would require a worldwide facial recognition database so he doesn't want it.

... but it will be there ready for use when we inevitably have a worldwide facial recognition database.

Should be a hit in China

Head mounted Go Pros are dorky and distracting AF. I want a a pair of fishing sunglasses with a camera with true high quality polarized lenses like Smith, Costa or Bajio offer.

Yeah, Meta and Oakley offer polarized lenses but the consensus from the fishing community is these are not on par with the industry leading polarization.

My stepbrother coaches baseball. He uses them with his players and has found them very helpful. Additionally, we're in the age now that you want everything going on recorded if you're a coach or teacher to save your own ass if some baseless accusations come against you.

My wife was about to go up and slug the guy walking around saying "Hey Meta" every 30 seconds at the resort we just stayed at.

Not frequently, but last month I was looking through old photos I ended up with after my parents passed. My sister had passed away, so I was looking for old photos of her. I even found some pictures of my childhood best friends, I've known them for over 50 years. It actually spurred us to meet up for dinner.

That said, it's much easier with physical media, no one will have access to items stored in the cloud after I pass, so no one will ever see most of the pictures I've taken.

That's hilarious. The only time I ever saw the Google Glass glasses was going through airport security. Some fat 50ish year old dude in a cheap wearing them was in line nearby.

He reminded me of the diner in a cell phone commercial years ago who was shouting into his cell phone "yes, sell sell sell!" then it cuts to a kid on the other end of the line yeling "Mom, dad's doing it again!"

As far as the tech goes - seems great for examples people have already said as a gopro replacement. Good for theme park ride perspectives, capturing details about building projects, etc.

As far as wearing them around in public, that's as asinine as walking everywhere with your cellphone in front of you filming every thing you see. Who would be comfortable with a stranger clearly pointing a camera at you from 2 feet away, tilting it up and down to fully capture your image?

there are smart glasses that look like glasses, dont have cameras, and can send you notifications, translate, tele-prompt, etc

Yep, and if I'm in an intimate enough setting where it's hard to avoid, I'm going to ask the person to remove them before talking with them.

It's highly intrusive and creepy as hell. These things failed the first time they were tried several years ago, but I recognize everyone is much more cool with 1984 surveillance now.

I wear contact lenses the vast majority of the time and have normal lenses for reading and stuff.

I initially got smart glasses exclusively to wear on evening walks where I want to give my eyes a breather but also wanted something I could listen to podcasts and stuff on and not use earbuds. I've since started utilizing them for phone calls quite a bit if I'm working from home.

I really only wear them at home or around the neighborhood and I've worn them a couple of times on hikes to utilize the AI features and minimal video and photos.

In the rare times I've worn them out of those settings it's either been with close friends who trust me enough not to care… then I think people overrate how much strangers actually pay attention to you. So no… never been asked about privacy.

It's funny so many people seem super concerned with the camera. It's by far what I utilize the least because the photos and video are a bit crap on them and I look at that functionality as really a novelty rather than a feature.

Because this entire thing is incrementalism. The camera will continually get better.

I could see some use of these around the house outside of the public, but it would stop there for me.

i somewhat agree with this… but it's also why I opted to get them. It's the best true hands free device I've ever purchased. After setup there really isn't a reason to natively monkey around in the Meta app much. I suppose that changes some if you utilize the camera functions more than I do.

In that vein, it probably has reduced tech interaction in my life when I'm wearing them.

It's a good thing lockers are mostly out of use in Middle and High School nowadays. I could see people wearing these things being stuffed into them.

Call me a luddite if you want to, but these things seem unnecessary and will only serve to enable mentally ill streamers and people obsessed with social media.

I've thought about getting a pair for golf but they don't currently link to the golfing app I use. I already wear sunglasses when golfing, it would be great to be able to use them for distance to green, wind, distance to hazards, etc. it would be even better if they had a heads up display that could imbed a shot tracer to help with tracking your ball.

Now imagine you don't have to.

The technology is still somewhat in it's infancy, intrusive and riddled with privacy concerns... but it definitely has use cases.

Already starting to tie it into Arccos and 18 Birdies, but I use Tangent.

The ball tracking would be great to help me find my ball but that isn't a feature yet.

I know they've made some of the want to be influencers even more insufferable now that they can record at all times. An aggie and astro fan actually falls into this group.

If you want to be a part of modern society and/or the business world, you absolutely do.

The frequency of which you really need to is up for debate, but silly to try and act like we're going to jettison cell phone usage.
