In my experience they were average until they suddenly went way below average with no explanation. Think it was infrastructure issues or hardware issues. At which point they became completely unhelpful and the service was unusable

Switched to att fiber and DIRECTV stream. So far that has been better and problem free. Though I have no particular confidence they won't decline as well.

For both, I only use their required gateway modem and have my own routers

I don't use them for anything other than getting Internet to my house.

I have my own modem & mesh network for my wireless and I use YouTube TV and other streaming services for TV.

So for me they are fine, but I don't use any of their hardware or any of their services other than Internet.

Spectrum has been the only internet provider in my subdivision for years and they are terrible. We average 3 outages per week and their CS does nothing to offset it. Not even a $5 credit. Recently they had a line issue so they ran an orange jumper cable from the box two doors down to the pedestal in my yard to restore service. That cable sat across three front yards for months before they repaired anything and I found out they only completed the repair because my neighbor rode their ass for weeks to get it fixed properly.

Tachus/Ezeefiber is coming in so Spectrum is getting dropped like a bad habit as soon as that's available. I'll have 5gig up/down for the same price I paid Spectrum for 500/20.

I've had several internet providers over the years (including Spectrum) and I've never really had any complaints about any of them.

Why? Why would anyone get a 5Gbps connection? You do realize nothing you do will even use half that bandwidth, right? Hell, I would **** a brick if you actually had a device that could utilize that kind of bandwidth in full. I'd just pay for a 1Gbps pipe, unless they are just giving away 5Gbps at the same price as 1Gbps

ETA: a 5Gbps connection could technically support around 625 people all streaming a 4K video at the same time.

1gig is $10 less per month ($89 vs $99/mo). I upload/download very large files for work (upwards of a several hundred gb at a time, largest I recall was 1.2TB), my home network is built for up to 10gbps, and because I can. So why not?

Key question is what else is available. If you have fiber available, absolutely go that route over Spectrum. Besides the speed disparity, coax networks are janky in general because of all the "active" gear in the field (amplifiers, fiber to coax nodes, etc.). Outages galore. Fiber to the home is completely passive distribution and rock solid. I dropped Spectrum for ATT Fiber within days of fiber being available at my house.

How does it compare to Google fiber?

I got frustrated with the bill creep with Spectrum. Every few months it would go up $5. Used to be I could call them and negotiate it down. Lately they don't negotiate anymore. Last time I told them I have Spectrum, Astound, AT&T, and Google in my neighborhood, so I had a choice. They didn't seem to care. The only reason I didn't change was because all the others either sucked or were comparably priced.

Same guidance applies. Fiber > cable modem nearly 100% of the time, from a pure tech perspective.

Also have not had my bill creep one cent in the couple of years I've had ATT Fiber. Was constantly playing games with Spectrum although I had TV service through them as well. Switched to YouTube TV when I moved over to fiber.

Spectrum is terrible. We've had two separate outages where we are that lasted longer than 48 hours. Both on weekends too. We have a weekly outage of 30m to 1 hour at a minimum as well.

I just switched us to ATT Fiber last Friday. Our neighborhood just got fiber about 3 months ago. Half the cost of Spectrum and twice the speed.

I think Spectrum is just luck of the draw and whether their infrastructure that reaches your house specifically is decent or not. I had Spectrum for 13 years and rarely had any issues, while people on the other side of town say it is barely usable.

I will still say that Spectrum has some of the best customer support/service of any large corp. They have live agents for both phone and chat support, and they are US based.

ISP performance is heavily location-dependent. My wife and I have had Spectrum collectively at four different places across Dallas/Plano and have hardly ever had issues outside of a case where a rental neighbor cut the line while replacing a fence post. In that instance, Spectrum was out the next day to fix the line, was super impressed by their responsiveness. Meanwhile, Frontier also services our area, but I refuse to do business with them due to sketchy customer service and outages multiple times a week years ago at my workplace when they took over Verizon's network around DFW. Meanwhile, we have friends in DFW with the complete opposite experience whom have switched away from Spectrum due to frequent outages or poor customer service. I would suggest asking your neighbors to see who they recommend! My only complaint with Spectrum is their pricing, they really don't do much to keep existing customers from switching.

My situation is slightly different. I'm rural and currently using a wireless signal over a visible sight line radio tower.

Spectrum just came in and trenched data lines for what I presume is a fiber / coaxial hybrid service. The technology I'm sure will be an upgrade over what I"m currently using, however, I"m worried aobut Spectrum's less than stellar reputation for service, outages and recovery.
