I figure things may have changed in the 12 years since I got a new TV. I have a Denon X4000 AVR and I usualy hook everything to the AVR and then it sends whatever to the TV. I have a universal programmed remote.

So....I got a brand new samsung TV 4k HDR blah blah blah. I have a 4k Roku. It's plugged into my Denon X4000. Upon playing 4k content it plays for a minute and I get a nasty HDCP 2.2 Error. So, it seems my Denon X4000 uses HDMI 1.4 and does not support HDCP 2.2.

So, my questions are 3 fold....

1.) Is this still the preferred method of connecting devices, where the AVR handles the control and switching and sound, assuming all my devices and technology were up to date?

2.) Can I make my current setup work and get 4K HDR content? I guess I could plug Roku directly into TV and use eARC to the AVR, but historically, that has been glitchy and less than ideal.

3.) I have a Denon x1300W that's brand new in the box that does seem to have what I need...(https://www.denon.com/en-au/shop/avreceiver/avrx1300w) It's only a few years newer than my X4000. Should I just toss this into my system and retire the X4000?

What is the best way to make my stuff work? I have a typical 5.2 surround with dual 12" subs and this TV is our 'do everything' tv. It's our media room, our living room, our watch everything everyday TV so I want it set up right. The technology just past me by a bit and I could use some guidance from you fellas.

We consume exclusively from Roku.

TBH, i use my tv as the main input switching device now and have it pass audio to my surround system. Both optical and hdmi (ARC) should work for your needs even on the 4000. Most newer tvs have 4+ hdmi ports so you should be able to plug all your devices into it still. The smart remote should be programmable to still control the tv and surround independently.

HDCP is a pain. Everything in the chain has to have it in order to work. The only workaround is to use non- digital connections like fiber optic or component cables or to completely bypass the non- hdcp component in the chain. And also you have to make sure your HDMI cables have hdcp.
If any device in the chain is not compliant, you'll get a handshake error and it won't work.

Is the Roku new as well? Or is the TV the only new thing in the chain?

Roku isn't brand new but it's less than 1 year. It's a newer 4K model. The cables are probably fine but that's easy to fix if not. There is only one. The only item for sure in the mix that is not HDCP 2.2 and not HDMI 2.0 is the AVR.

I hate to retire my trusty Denon but it sounds like the one on my shelf unopened is the obvious answer here. That or eARC the current setup which, as I said, has historically be a pain.

The x4000 is a 2013 model and the x1300w is a 2017 model. I feel like this is the answer but am second guessing.

If optical doesn't work for you, you don't necessarily need to use eARC if your remote is already smart enough to control the tv, receiver and boxes independently. Just using HDMI to pass the sound without using eARC should get you everything. Or do you mean the sound itself has been glitchy and not the control the tv aspect of eARC?

Doesnt matter. The new AVR bricked on update. Brand new in box. Denon suport bailed out after 30 seconds of help and said its toast and I have to pay for service.

It won't update, it won't factory hard reset.

Guess I'm looking for a new AVR.

Anyone happen to be a Denon tech that can manually help me out with this or do I just drop this in my local dumpster and get a different brand? It had a lifespan of 1 hour. Lol.
