ezee Fiber - Anyone familiar with this Fiber Internet company? We live in Katy and my neighborhood just had fiber installed terminating in a box in the front yard (just like water meter/cutoff box) and this company immediately started soliciting.

Wondering if they are going to be our only Fiber option and if they are reputable? Offering options from 1 Gig ($69) to 8 Gig ($119) - That price is great compared to crap we are getting from AT&T. Guess it depends on the quality of the Router they provide and if it gets throttled based on everyone's usage?

Any info appreciated.

I've never heard of that company, but 8 Gig? Are you sure it's 8 Gig? That speed makes no sense at all. Past 1 Gb, while is now cheaper with 2.5Gb standards you'll probably need to upgrade most devices to take advantage. For 95% of the population it's just bragging points to have speeds above a gigabit right now. I'm heavy into tech, have 5 networks in the house and I don't have any issues using the 1 Gb connection we just got.

I've always been an advocate of buying your own wifi router. Most of the equipment that gets provided is mediocre at best and if you have your own, you don't have to reconnect stuff when the ISP replaces their stuff.

I have AT&T fiber and I've been pleasantly surprised with the level of service. They haven't raised the price on me and I get the advertised speeds. That said, I would go with a competitor in a second if the price was right just to promote choice. In all likelihood, they're just fine.

1gig means that your connection will be able to download at or around 100MB/s of data. This is more than most websites will even serve you. If you don't sit there running speed tests, worrying about if you are getting 950mbps instead of 1000mbps, you'll probably never run into a situation where your connection is the problem. For $69, you'll very likely get a network connection that you no longer have to think about.

Got a recommendation for a router? My tech closet is on the 2nd floor and some routers struggle to reach the downstairs well - are some routers wifi "stronger" than others or have easy to install extenders? In addition to wifi I need at least 1 ethernet connection to tie into some wired connections.

Thanks for the help..

You can look around this forum for the latest and greatest recommended mesh system. People ask every couple months. Many mesh systems will allow you to plug an ethernet device into one of the extenders.

For a non-typical recommendation, I really like wireless gear from Aruba Networks. Their "Instant On" product line is marketed more toward businesses but is very simple to install and manage via their app. Have been running their stuff at my house for close to two years now (hard wired to a PoE switch) and have had zero issues and outstanding coverage throughout.

Edit: I use their access points only, with separate (Ubiquiti) router.

Are they laying their own fiber, or are they a reseller of a different provider? I know around my area there are a few fiber companies, but they all use ATT's fiber network.

Earthlink had an exclusive window to sell Frontier FiOS in my neighborhood when the fiber was first put down.
