My 11 year old accidently flung a hard plastic object at my 2 day old LED/LCD TV. Hit the TV near the top left hand corner, and it is now very obviously 'cracked.'

I'm guessing it's not the worth cost of repair and better to just bit the bullet on two TVs in less than a week. Am i wrong?

this is the TV, btw (not high end, i know...but beats my 50in old one):

Check your CC policy if you purchased it with one. Some have automatic protections. Or less*cough* legitimate way of purchase a "accidental" coverage warranty since your still in the 30 day grace period, wait out the minimum number of days for a claim and file claim to get your tv cost back. In mean time, go buy new one while your wait.

I'm a very honest guy... never stolen anything in my life and I always do the right thing in my business dealings, even if that means falling on the sword.

But I feel differently when it comes to retail transactions. I have been screwed so many times by items that simply stop working, go bad, etc. after a very short period of time. It's frustrating to have your money wasted time and time again.

If I bought an item and something isn't right within a few days or so, I'm taking that sucker back, even if I think I might have been the one that messed it up. This sort of thing is 100% built into the price of these things (freight damage, customer returns, etc).

IMO, take that sucker back, tell them it was broken and you would like to exchange it.

The arguably shady part isn't about whether or not it was accidental... The arguably shady part is that you would be buying an accidental damage policy AFTER the accident happened.

That said, go for it. Screw the insurance companies.

In this case, honesty might not have been the best policy at Costco. If you just plead ignorance and said "I opened up the box and it was already broken" they would have let you exchange it. Whether or not you're okay with doing that is a personal decision.

LOL, yeah pretty much. When it comes to things with moving part or technology, we've all been on the bad end of things not working or breaking... everything from a $100 tool to a $50,000 car. All you can do is shrug it off and say "oh well".

So in the rare instance when you can utilize a retail store's power and connection with their suppliers to get something fixed, then do it! There's a reason why most families with a Costco membership spend thousands there every year, and one of those reasons is they have a very consumer friendly return policy.

Are we talking about between getting a new TV vs the lessons we want our children to learn?
