Looking for a new pen. I like 'em fancy. What have you seen or purchased that you can recommend?

Get a custom made pen. Here's a few I made a few years back when getting back into woodworking. Too hot to do it now though.

I use two pens.

A Montblanc Boheme rollerball and a Montblanc Meisterstuck Legrand fountain pen.

At least I used to before I essentially stopped writing and now I just type all day.

I use a TWSBI 580 daily. I know it's not the best of the best but I love it. If you're looking to get started cheaply grab a Pilot, TWSBI, or Lamy.

A TWSBI ECO is my daily writer/beater. Price to performance and even aesthetics is so hard to beat in my opinion. I have the cement gray LE version they did a couple of years ago and love that damn thing. Like $40 shipped. I use it more than my 580s and Precision, which are ostensibly supposed to be better.

I feel like it should be mentioned, but if you're going to get a decent pen, you must ABSOLUTELY make sure you have good quality paper. I went to Japan a few months ago and I loaded up on Midori, but there are tons of options. I used Rhodia for a while and Leuchtturms, but man I love Midori.

Just dug these Mont Blancs out of a drawer. They would probably be considered great pens. These have been sitting in a drawer for 13 years. I always just use a basic pen my wife gets by bulk at Walmart tbh. That said, we probably have 20+ mechanical pencils in our junk drawer, plus tons of regular pencils that are never sharp. A couple times a week a use a pencil for a specific thing, and I much prefer a mechanical, but they are always jacked up. From now on, I'm gonna use my $700 Montblanc pencil (1st in pic). Thanks for this reminder!

(Note, not a flex, they were all gifts).

If you want a really good mechanical pencil for a decent price - Rotring 600. Another pick up from Kyoto, lol.

I finally broke down and bought a special edition one, but this is an amazing pen. And it's also a fidget toy at the same time.

A) Big fan of the tactile turns for ball points, especially with a space pen refill.

B) Fan of keeping a brass space pen in my pocket - goes through the wash well, and it's a fairly permanent ink and a handy size.

C) Personally, I usually use Pentel 2B .9MM lead, in a Pentel graphgear 1000 pencil, on rite in the rain paper, but I write a lot more notes in freezers, beaches, and kitchens than most people.

D) What kind of volume of writing are you doing?

A Pilot VP works great, as something to carry, but can only do a few pages per fill.

PT 3776 works well for a "leave and forget". A PT Preppy does great for the same job, with permanent/security ink.

A pilot 76 is probably my favorite bulk writing pen. I like the pilot parallel for letter writing.

An FC music nib is nice but mines a bit drier than I prefer - FC nibs always seem a bit dry.
