I know there is a thread for the upcoming Diablo 4... But, based on blizzard over the last 10 years, consider me pretty uninterested until after reviews.

I've tried path of exile several times since ~2016 and could never really get into it. It is an extremely detailed game (Google the passive tree, if you've never seen it) and the difficulty ramps up quite a bit throughout the campaign; then you get to the "mapping" phase and it is an entire game in itself.

So many cool and unique builds you can do and all of your skills can be combined with others to make really interesting play styles.

It has finally got me over the last year or so. Finally folded and tried to "follow" a guide and it has really opened the playing experience up for me. I've been able to learn about all the complex mechanics while still playing and progressing in the game.

Micro transactions are mainly skins/texture although there are some QOL upgrades when you get deep in the game. Nothing you buy can make you "better".

Anyway, just wanted to see if there were any other ags who have tried it or play it.

More like path of spreadsheet and I don't want to click on anything because I could bork my character and have to start over.

Until that game puts respec in I will never try it.

Played it a long time ago but builds are definitely way too in-depth for me to try and play again.

If I'm going to fiddle with an in depth ARPG it would be grim dawn.

Honestly wish they would make a better multipayer supported grim dawn 2 that has server based saves for a good community.

Anyone have any newer ARPGs/looter shooters that are worth it? Haven't tried anything since wolcen landed on its face a few years ago, then outriders which was pretty good until end game.

My favorite concepts have been anthem/outriders but these companies always manage to screw up great gameplay with Mind bogglingly bad loot systems/everything else.

There really needs to be an in between game. Diablo 3 was WAY too watered down and POE is WAY too deep. I don't have time to make spreadsheets and comparisons of the 4 billion builds possible.

There is respec, a currency item that you can get that allows it.

No, a rare item that you would have to "buy" while using a borked character is not a respec option in any normal sense.

Enjoyed Grim Dawn. Y'all have already scared me away from this one. Ain't nobody got time for that.

Valid complaints, for sure.

Respec currencies are available and drop frequently; however, there is not flexibility to completely change your build on the whim. If you are going for a character that utilizes a bow and lightning damage, you can't change your mind halfway through the game and use dual axes with poison. You might as well reroll your character at that point.

I dont do any spreadsheets. Path of building is an add-on that is essential, though. You are able to import in your character (literally as simple as typing in your username) and the program calculates everything you'd ever need (more accurate dps, damage reduction, etc.). It also provides the ability to spec/respec outside of the game (so you don't need to spend respec points) and see differences between gear options.

It is a complex game but that is due to the massive amount of content in the game. Which I think is a good thing. So much to figure out and learn about the game.

Fun game. I play it about every other league. I have to follow a build because if I tried doing it on my own I don't think I would even make it to red maps. Very very in depth game but if you are a new player then I would look up they meta builds for that league and do one of them to help make your first league as enjoyable as possible. I always do the solo self found league because it forces you to learn different crafting mechanics.

Also, the great thing about the game is if you take a break then it doesn't matter. You won't fall behind a progression system. You can just jump back in. A new league is about every three months.

I was such a big Diablo 1 and 2 fan that pretty much any action RPG on the horizon has my attention in hopes that it will scratch that itch as much as those two games did. So I was aware of PoE early on and even beta tested in late 2011/early 2012. There was something awkward and clunky about it in its early days that put me off. I've come back and tried it multiple times since then, the latest attempt was probably around 2020 and while that clunkiness has been cleaned up, there's just a little too much going on for my liking and it never hooks me. But hey, it's popular for a reason, it just doesn't do it for me.

Grim Dawn has been by far my favorite ARPG since Diablo 2. But like Madmarttigan said, it is client side character storage so there's no real sense of community or economy in that one beyond the small group of friends I put a ton of hours into the game with.

Fingers crossed Diablo IV is something special.

I played A LOT in 20-21…. Eventually got tired of GGG nerfing all the fun builds, making crafting impossible again by nerfing harvest to death after making it actually fun and their refusal to implement a real trading or auction system.

Another crap blizzard game. Who woulda thunk it.

I'm no path of exile homer but if d4 didn't scratch the itch like you were looking for, give path of exile a try. It is free to play.

A new "league" coming up in a month or so, although I love playing more towards the end of leagues (like right now). The user base still playing at that point truly loves the game and has always been super kind with dumb questions/trying to learn.

Ha, it's not a crap game. But you came at this from a biased point of view, so don't let me dissuade you.

I'm fairly casual with ARPGs. I like to play up until the min/max really is the last thing you can do. So take my D4 opinion with a grain of salt (and I know there are lots of complaints about endgame). But I'm having way more fun with it than I ever did with POE. It's the right sweet spot between the watered down D3 and the complex POE, for me.

I'm not a casual and have the same opinion as you, I'm at over 100 hours into D4 now and having way more fun than I ever did in PoE as well. D4 isn't perfect by any means, but it's definitely not crap, far from it. It's got an awesome foundation, I'm thoroughly enjoying it. This most recent patch seems like more steps in the wrong direction than right, but a bunch of whiney Reddit babies doesn't mean the game sucks.
