Hogwarts Legacy

I'm amazed that there isn't already a topic for this game in The Nerdery. I'm a pretty big Potterhead and am looking forward to playing (or rather watching my son play) this game on the PS5 (my gamer days, with the exception of playing some FIFA from time-to-time, are well behind me).

Am I the only person in here who has pre-ordered this game?

I have it pre-ordered but I've got a huge amount on my steam playlist. I'd encourage you to look at a Steam Deck. It's freaking awesome for busier on the go gamers.

My wife and one of our good friends (who is a humongous Potter fan) are both looking forward to it. I'll probably give it a playthrough.

A guy I worked with at my last job was there in the early days and talked about how big of a mess development on it was. The way it keeps getting delayed makes it seem like it still might be.

I'm sure it has been a pain, but the video clips that have shared from it look amazing.
Here's hoping!

HUGE Potter Head myself. I am tentatively excited about it. Haven't followed development of it much though. I have two main worries.

  • Depth of design and play
  • Outside politics and cultural shenanigans

I have seen several games that have tried to dabble in the ARPG world and just flat out fail. Mainly from shallow gameplay and design which usually stems from either laziness, just lack of creativity, or dumbing it down to appease the masses. Fear the last one for sure.

And I know it is bad F16 juju but the second bullet point is also a big one for me. The Potterworld for better or for worse is the center of a lot of cultural nonsense and infighting. I don't think anyone can deny that at this point. Just worried if too much "catering" will also have a detriment on game setting, world, and story. I hope not but again….this is Harry Potter. LOT of haters out there that unfortunately squeal loud enough that it scares some people.

I too have been cautiously optimistic about this one. We'll see when it finally shows up, I guess. My biggest fear is whether the constant pushback on the date has been them working out the little bugs, to provide a great release experience; or because there have been so many issues that this is the earliest they can possibly release it, thereby giving us another Cyberpunk situation.

Feel the culture will always influence something like this, but i can't see what they would do that would change the experience.

I'm a huge Harry Potter book series fan, and of course have taken all the Pottermore quizzes to see what house I would be in, Patronus, and wand type. Every quiz I ever take puts me in Ravenclaw, which is the house I've always appreciated the most.

Planning on getting the new Xbox for this and Starfield. I have hopes, but I'm also reserved with the date getting pushed back. The last little release trailer looked really rough. The game play trailer from April was incredible. Which is it gonna be? I need them to drop like a 10-15 minute continous game play video. Not stitched scenes.

I've been impressed by the gameplay footage they have shown in their little teasers they release. I'm very much looking forward to this but cautiously. As a Harry Potter fan I've been waiting for a game like this for a long time

I'm excited for this and cautiously optimistic based on the released footage. I know you cant tell how the actual gameplay is and it could end up being pretty to look at but not very fun to play, but what I've seen so far exceeded my expectations. Will definitely be getting this day 1.

Fun little gameplay video. Getting excited to explore Hogwarts:

I am a HUGE Potterhead and plan on making this the focus of my twitch stream for quite awhile. I will probably spend the first month alone just exploring Hogwarts. From what the developers said while standing atop the Astronomy tower, if you can see it, you can go there. Meaning the open world might actually be bigger than we have all anticipated. ANd surely there will be Quidditch DLC down the road, so i can imagine that this will take up a majority of my gaming time....but I am perfectly fine with that!

As much as Steam Deck has opened my playing time I haven't had time to get to everything in my list. This game is going to crush me. Jesus.

I feel your pain. I am actually happy they pushed it back to February 23 since the new expansion for WoW hits in a couple of weeks. That will keep me busy for the next three months along with season 1 of Modern Warfare 2

I pulled out the IV on WoW Classic. I still have Trails to Zero, Trails to Azure, Trails to Reverie, Front Mission Remake, the new Zelda, Hogwarts Legacy, I'm playing Tactics Ogre right now... Man I have a job, wife and kids, I don't have time for this! LOL.

I am the on the other side. Being a GenX gamer is tough for a long time. I missed out on the whole PS3, Xbox 360 generation. But I am single, make decent money and have an 11 yr old son that loves to game as much as I do. So I am really in heaven now! I can't imagine what it would have been like to be raised by a gamer dad. Especially one that takes it pretty serious.

Eh I was sponsored when I was at A&M for LoL and WoW (Vanilla, TBC when it was original). I have a teen that is into it a small amount and the younger ones are gamer curious. But my wife is super anti gaming (it's an interesting dynamic) so we have a Switch and the oldest has a XBox but we keep it pretty chill. Football season is chaos because I coach (have for more than a decade) oldest is a QB, youngest is just starting tackle and the girl is in cheer. Fall is toast on gaming time.

I'd love to get them into some of it, but I need to build their extra circulars and other stuff first.

If you don't mind me asking, why? I actually consider my sons gaming as extra curricular. Now I know I might be a bit different since I made a career for much of his and my daughters life in the gaming industry (marketing for a few studios). But to watch the things my son creates in Minecraft is amazing and could easily lead him into being an architect. My daughter took her love of gaming and the artistic side (she would spend hours with the artists at NCSoft) and is now starting her tattoo apprenticeship. I played sports my entire childhood and I wish more than anything I had spent that time in a PC or playing D&D instead of trying to catch up on all that now .

It's funny I think gaming has hurt my life more than helped it. It's an unhealthy addiction if anything, particularly during my WoW days.

Since having a kid I'm a lot better at moderation. Still takes away time from more important things like adulting and exercise.

Different cultures and backgrounds mostly is my guess. Different level of technical comfort. She just doesn't approve over other activities. My sons are both big into football and community service and my daughter is in, it seems like, everything. I don't disagree with you that it can be a nice addition but it can be very addictive with so many things specifically designed to provoke dopamine responses. I'd rather they develop those in person social skills and more physical skills and hobbie while they're younger and then add some of the other things later.

They've dropped a couple of gameplay showcases. Game looks good. They announced the last generation consoles release is being delayed a couple months. Next generation comes out in Feb

The open world reminds me of Red Dead. It's huge!

I'm in the same boat and I catch a lot of flack from her for playing video games (as opposed to sitting on the couch watching trash tv). I'm hoping I can get her into this. She's a crazy HP fan

NGL, any time I see a massive IP like this get a video game adaptation, I'm skeptical.

But also NGL, after seeing the whole hop-on-the-broom-and-go-anywhere showcase vid - it looks pretty impressive.

Not to derail this thread too much, but much of that has died down. Being part of the LGBTQ community myself, there are many of us who have had ZERO issue with anything Rowling has said. She is a woman standing up for women's rights and I applaud her for not backing down. I am a member of multiple HP groups and anyone who brings it up is immediately shot down.

Don't worry, the so called "issues" are nonissues. Harry Potter still remains a top seller, Rowling is still making a gazillion dollars and 95% of the Potterheads don't give a sh@@

On a side note, many people don't know the studio that is making this game, Avalanche Games. They are best known for making Disney games and most recently the Disney Infinity series. I will say this, Disney Infinity was one of the most fun and creative games I have ever played. The sandbox modes were amazing and the story lines and trying to find new characters at the store was always fun. It's a huge change from what they have made, but I have watched countless development hours of Legacy and I am confident it will be a great game.

I have to admit though, as a huge Potterhead, I will probably spend the first few hours just exploring Hogwarts. Only thing I can't decide is to get the PC version or the Xbox Series X.....

For some reason I made it up in my mind that this was going to be some sort of HP mmo type game, I didn't realize it was just an open world single player experience. Not really my cup of tea.

While there certainly have been times that gaming has hurt my life, namely in college and early on in my marriage, keeping my gaming time moderate has helped me see gaming as a healthy escape. I play on Friday and Saturday nights only, after I've spent quality time with the wife. Still leaves enough time for exercise and adulting.
