Google committing to a technology it then unceremoniously abandons 2 years later? Who would have thought?

Google is saying the reason they are shutting it down is because nobody is really purchasing it. So basically blaming the consumers.

If you bought that controller thru Google then you really got a win since you'll be getting a refund from Google for it (they're not requiring hardware to be returned).

Just hope the ebay buyer doesn't void/cancel/return the purchase for the extra $

Well that's kind of the way it works. If something doesn't sell, it goes away.

I'm surprised it lasted as long as it did, especially after they had a bit of an exodus early part of 2021.

I wonder if this was a self-fulfilling prophecy. Google's habit of discontinuing services was one of the first things discussed on here when they announced Stadia. People were hesitant to get in, concerned that it would shut down after a couple years and you'd be left with game purchases you can no longer use. Was the poor adoption because of a bad service, or because didn't trust that it would be around long term?

I would say it didn't help but what exactly was the draw supposed to be at this point even if they held on for another few years? They quit trying to make exclusive content a year and a half ago just over a year after it launched.

Glad I can still use Picassa. :-)

I actually enjoyed the service, but not enough to pay for it. I had a few 6 months-free promotions that I used.

Guess my "kids" are getting a PS5 this Christmas.

yeah i bought a couple things from there on sale, but never committed to it because i knew theyd just kill it at some point. i think game streaming is a good idea, but its not ready to take on a competitor like steam just yet.
