Hey guys. This is a weird question that comes way out of left field.

My son and I were talking about homebrew NES games for some reason, and the idea of a service that makes custom games for people came up. Do you know of any such service or person? We'd like to have an old school NES Paperboy game that was our current neighborhood, including characters that resembled our neighbors. Is my best bet just to learn how to do it myself or is there someone who does that kind of thing?

Thanks!

Much of it depends on what you are willing to spend, but https://www.reddit.com/r/gamedev/ would be a good place to inquire about it.

NES sprite manipulation is fairly rudimentary, but understand the palettes and gameplay you are going to be dealing with our rather basic. For Paperboy, the player only goes "up" one street, and the houses are all very basic in design... So your neighbors house is going to look a lot like a generic in-game house any way you do it. Designers in the 8-bit era really didn't get near enough credit for what they were able to do with pixels.... Mario has a mustache because you couldn't realistically do a mouth with 6 pixels.

You'd want a game that offers more larger graphics to really do something that truly looks personal. Ie. the Punch Out in-between round screen where the player and opponent have large graphics. Now, you could potentially have the in-fight players look like people you know, but that's a pretty large task that is probably going to cost you at least 4 figures.

I believe there is a C compiler for genesis. much easier than messing with odd motorola knock off assy code

I dabled with this while taking an assembly language class in college. what you're asking for would cost a fortune

Raise your hand if you just googled NES Mario to count the pixels like I did.
