Fire Tablet in-app purchasing settings trouble?

Looking for some help guys and the internet is not being helpful... so I'm appealing to the Nerdery for support.

I've got an older family member with a current generation Amazon Fire Kindle Tablet. I've had his purchasing settings set up so that he doesn't have to input his Amazon password when he wants to purchase something from the main Amazon Shopping app on the device... but he does have to input his password if he wants to make in-app purchases (on downloaded apps from the Amazon App Store) on the device.

Well yesterday, the app (game) that he plays a lot just stopped asking for the Amazon password prior to in-app purchases and processed a purchase without needing his password.

Since I couldn't remember precisely all the minute details in regard to how I initially set up his appstore purchasing settings I went searching online for answers. My initial thought was that perhaps a setting had been changed by an update to the Amazon Appstore (or less likely the device's Operating System software) and I wanted to see if I could figure out what that was in case a setting needed to be switched back to what it was previously.

Unfortunately, when I searched online to figure out how I had originally set the in-app purchasing protocols everywhere I looked sent to me to the following instructions... these coming from the Amazon website itself.

  • Set Parental Controls for In-App Purchases
  • Avoid unwanted in-app purchases by enabling parental controls for added security on your device.
  • Launch the Amazon Appstore on your device.
  • Select Account.
  • Select Settings.
  • Select Parental Controls.
  • Select Enable Parental Controls and then enter your Amazon account password.
  • Once you enable parental controls, you must enter your Amazon password to complete any in-app purchases on your device.

Well this was very frustrating... because when I opened up the Amazon Appstore on his device, there no longer exists a Parental Controls option under the Settings menu within the app.

So, I went into the main system settings menu on the device and found a Parental Controls setting there, which was apparently toggled off. "No problem," I thought, "perhaps somehow an Operating System update or something turned that off... I'll just toggle it back on and see what happens."

Well, that was disappointing, because instead of allowing me to toggle it back on and perhaps revert his settings back to what (I assume) they used to be a few days ago... it asked me to "Enter New Password (at least 4 characters)" as if I had never turned on the Parental Controls on his device ever before.

Knowing for sure that I had neither created for him in the past a secondary password to utilize Parental Control protocols within the main system settings for the device, and knowing for sure that had he never before had to type in this (or any other) secondary password to make in-app purchases, I backed out of that and left the Parental Controls option for the device toggled "off"... as it was before I began troubleshooting.

Anyway, as I am at this impasse I appeal to the Nerdery for help:

1. Is anyone familiar with any very recent OS updates or Amazon App Store payment protocol changes that were instituted that might have changed the settings utilized by that app?
2. Is so (or if not), has anyone had the same issue over the last few days and successfully resolved it, and if so how?

Thanks Ags!

Might try a full clearing of app data under the android app controls on the tablet and then log back in? Update the app? Mine still has the PC settings option in it but this is on Android phone, not a fire tablet.
