Looking to grab a tablet for hiking, backpacking, and off road driving where cellular service won't be available. Solution is pre-downloaded maps, then having a built in GPS chip that allows use of maps without needing any service.

Any suggestions of best tablet choices for this application?

Prefer tablet over iPhone for variety of reasons, mostly screen size on tablet and leaving phone batter charged.

I'd just get one that fits in within the eco system you currently have.

With the iOS devices, you need to get one that has cellular on it as the wifi only devices don't come with GPS chips.

The iOS devices can use an external Bluetooth gps for navigation data so the expensive cellular models aren't required.

But for backpacking I would get a Garmin eTrex for day hikes or an inReach Mini 2 for multi day backcountry hikes.

I have an old XGPS 150 that works great for getting me position info. Battery lasts 8 hours easily. I put some webbing and a plastic clip on it so that it can be clipped to the outside of a bag and not have the buttons accidentally pushed. I've used it with iPhones, iPads, and android tablets without any problems. I see some on eBay now for less than $100.

Thanks for suggestions. I need a bit more screen than some of the non tablet suggestions. Wanting to zoom out and see boundaries and property lines and estimate hiking distances, etc

for an android solution i'd look at Samsung's Galaxy Tab A8. 10' screen and should have GPS in the wifi model.

Thanks Hed. I'll take a look. I need to research and make sure Gaia GPS app is clean on Android. I've heard mixed reviews
