This is in my opinion the best overall shooter to come along in a WHILE. If you've got a PS5 or Xbone you should check it out. It's not arcadey/chaotic like BF/COD and not as mil sim as Squad or Arma. It is a really nice balance between the two where you don't feel like you're playing a game designed for 12 year olds but it keeps you engaged. It's definitely more geared for teamwork and communication and not for lone-wolfing it. K-D ratio doesn't really matter in the grand scheme so there are a lot of ways to contribute to a team win other than just getting as many kills as possible. Beautiful environments that feel like you're inside an episode of Band of Brothers, fairly realistic weapons without the insanely stupid mod overkill of most FPS games, and a dev team that actually addresses and fixes what few bugs exist. Y'all check it out!

Seen a lot of posts like this. BF went off the rails starting with BF1.

Is this the game that was published by Team 17?

I finished the Campaign in COD Vanguard recently. Good but short. I love WW2 campaigns.

I played the hell out is the Medal of Honor WW2 games back in the early 2000s

So it was never really on the rails in the first place then.

Is there a single campaign mode or is this purely MP?

No disc, it's downloaded for PS5 or Xbox. No campaign, but awesome 50 v 50 mp battles.

Not sure what you mean exactly but I had a ton of fun with BF2-BF4 and then it started down this path to try to bring in younger players and it is ****e now.

A bit of my own gameplay here. Playing as AT and I unlocked the satchel charge. Penetrated behind the enemy lines and found a tank in a vulnerable spot luckily with no infantry watching nearly. Wait for it...

You might know this, but BF1 came after a lot of others... specifically it was after BF4 and Hardline.

Here you go:

Actually thanks for this... I might check it out. If I recall correctly, it was a PS+ 2 months back or so. I routinely save those to my library just in case of situations like this. I probably logged 250-300 hours on BF4 (my first battlefield and online FPS), and never really got into BF1. Are you on PS5 or Xbone?

Also, how would you say it differs from BF4. I would not call BF4 arcady like COD... but would like to know your thoughts. If it matters, I would always run medic or engineer because my k/d ratio sucked, but I loved getting points off capturing the objective, healing squad, and repairing vehicles.

Differs from Bf4 in that it feels about as much like a war can as a video game. The battles are more of a slow slog. It might take 30 minutes for you and your guys to weaken and overrun an enemy position. You feel a lot more vulnerable and it only takes one shot often to go down, sometimes 2 or 3 max. The guns all feel much more authentic and take practice because you're often engaging enemies 50 meters or further out with no optic. And it just involves a great deal more coordination and teamwork to win. Squad play wins the game. It is a cinematic experience. You really do feel like you're inside of Band of Brothers. It's very replayable because the maps are large and the strong points generate with variaton so one round on one map might play very differently than another round on the same map. It definitely isn't for everyone, but if you've felt the last several iterations of the major studio FPS are kind if samey and uninteresting, HLL might be what you're looking for.

I assume would be tough for a noob to get up to speed. Most people micked up? One or two shots to go down, man I am going go get butalized.

My abilities as simple run and gun are also pretty lacking but there are some ways you can help your team win beyond that. In fact the wins are often just as much because of what you'd think of as the support or specialist roles. While the regular infantry are attacking or defending, medics are keeping them in the game, engineers are laying down important structures, support guys are bringing more supplies up to the frot, recon teams are moving behind enemy lines to cause disruptions, AT guys are finding and neutralizing armor, and artillery specialists are way in the rear laying down barrages. I've put considerable hours into the game and still haven't scratched the surface on all the cool stuff to do. And I've died a lot haha

It is a steep learning curve, but also fun, and the community is pretty helpful to new guys. You'll go from running around like a chicken with your head cut off to helping the team win witin your first week of trying it out. Lots of trial and error. I am still learning a lot of t. Yes, quite a few people are miced up and most of the SL's try to check as the round is starting who in their squad used mics. Thankfully the players seem to be about 25ish on average.

Meaning is there a single player campaign mode. Doesn't sound like it.

Oh ok, no definitely not. Gaming studios were finding it harder to justify dumping so much time and effort into a scripted experience which a player can only do once, as opposed to mp gameplay which can be replayed an endless amount of times. If youre looking for campaign this one isn't for you, bit the mp gameplay is excellent.

Thanks for the recommendation on this. Picked it up this evening. Have played 4 or 5 rounds. Had 2 good squads, working well together. The others, not so much.

This is very different from COD/BF, but I am enjoying it. I suck pretty badly, and not sure that is going to change, but I am looking forward to learning the game. I assume it will get better as I figure it out.

This game is amazing if you are in a good communicative squad. Even losing feels pretty good as long as your 5 other squad mates are all working together.

There is a command structure and light RTS mechanics given to certain roles. These are the big-picture strategy things that keep the flow of the game going. All other roles are meant to fill in a niche that your 6-person squad needs at a given moment.

The maps are huge and feel both authentic (directly modeled from actual WWII locations) and well designed for this type of shooter. There's usually 1-2 points that can be captured or defended at a time. You'll be playing infantry most of the time, but there's also armor squads and a couple of scout squads. In my short time playing in an armor squad, it requires a lot of team work, but it's also really rewarding when everyone's in sync. Haven't played a scout squad yet, but they're 2-man teams of a spotter and sniper, and a really good scout team can turn the tide of a battle.

The biggest couple of things to know as a new player:
  • Get a microphone and use it. Communication is the single most important thing in the game.
  • At the highest level, the game is about map control via player-buildable spawn points. Your squad lead can create 2 kinds of spawn points. Garrisons cost resources to build (the resources can be dropped by one of the other squad roles), and can be used by anyone on your team to spawn at. And outposts are free (on a cooldown timer) and can only be used by your squad. Without these spawn points you will have to run literal minutes to get back into the action and by that time your objective will be lost.
  • You will die a lot, but kills and deaths don't really matter as long as your squad can help complete an objective.
  • If you have friends who may be interested, get them to play with you. Comms are that important to having a good time. If you're playing solo, don't be afraid to hop around to different squads until you find one that is communicating well.

Most of the community is supportive of new players and will help point you in the right direction. Be a team player and no one will care that you don't have 1000 hours in the game yet.

Glad you're trying in out 04, yeah like I said the learing curve is steep and unforgiving and you have to make peace with dying a lot, but there are just a of intense, fun moments. Every once in a while you'll have a moment of glory and do something that really benefits the whole team.

Halibut, well said. You've described the game better than I did.

And get a load of these upcoming updated and additions:

Remember the good old days when a gaming studio would release an already solid game and then just continue to refine it and make it cooler? This game is already a blast and only going to get better. All of this with the original purchase of the game and not some stupid battle pass. Gotta love it.

I've been addicted for a couple months now. Playing on PC/Steam.

I haven't played a FPS regularly since Counter-Strike nearly 20 years ago… for a variety of reasons but frequently because nothing else compared and I was always disappointed.

This reminds me of CS, and goes way beyond.

It is not without flaws, and some of them get frustrating, but as mentioned above, it is actively being developed and at least right now it avoids subscriptions and DLC.

When I've had good squads, it might be the best game I've ever played. It's still fun even if the squad is bad, but you basically have to come up with alternative goals for yourself and just choose to do your own thing to influence the fight… medic in particular is a role where you can just follow a herd and stay busy and productive all game even if your squad is horrible.

My tips for new players:

- The guides I saw said to pick Rifleman first until you get a feel for the game. I disagree. I say you should pick Support. Just stick with your squad leader and drop supplies when he says to. Tell him you're new but you're willing to do whatever he says. He will be much more willing to help you and give advice because you're taking initiative to play a helpful role. Riflemen are worthless on a squad unless they're highly skilled players. As a support, you will learn a lot of how the game gets played just shadowing a good squad leader. You'll see where garrisons need to get built and when it's appropriate to build fortifications. You can also use this as a test… if your squad leader has no clue what to do with you, you know it's time to pick a different squad. Also - leveling up to 3 in Support is extremely valuable due to the ability to drop explosive ammo for AT and Eng. People love you if you've got ammo when they need it.

- Jump on an empty server and practice driving before you try in a live game. It is not easy (at least on PC, not sure about consoles). Practice on both tanks and trucks. Practice driving over different obstacles and see what can get you stuck and how to look out for it. Getting a supply or transport truck stuck in a real game is a very very bad thing. Getting a tank stuck is even worse. Make your mistakes when it won't matter.

- Similarly, if you think you're ready to try your hand at squad lead or spotter or tank commander, watch guides and practice those mechanics on an empty server. And on this note, I recommend watching a guide and stepping up early. You'll frequently find yourself in situations where your squad lead bails and no one wants to do it. Know the basic mechanics and step up… just tell them you're new and if they gripe, humbly offer to step down. 9 times out of 10, they won't want to and even if you're mediocre, a squad that's getting OPs built is much better than a squad that isn't.

- Don't pick Spotter ever. (Because I want it)

I tried this game on ps5, but apparently there is a huge bug in it where the mic/squad communication does not work at all. Seems to be no immediate fix to it as well.

Yeah, the coms glitch kind of randomly comes and goes. Mine will work for a whole round and randomly stop working for part of the next round. I'm sure they'll fix it soon. Even with mic dropped out it's still fun.

Yeah I tried it on PS5 too. Got a few kills and died a bunch. I didn't understand the military jargon over the mic, so I uninstalled it. Can see why some people would be into this though, looks like a great game for fans of realism.

How long do you want to ignore this user?
It just has a steep learning curve and no tutorial, so it takes playing for a while and chatting with squaddies to figure certain things out. I'm still dying a lot, but in general I'm slowly getting more kills and definitely figuring out how to be more an asset to the team. So glad this exists because most other shooters have gone totally the wrong direction.

Just remember to give it time. Your first few hours playing you'll likely be a little disoriented and will feel like a moving target. Find a good squad using their mics and ask questions. Find a class you like, DON'T give one F about k/d. Eventually you'll realize this shooter is a hell of a lot of fun.

Add me on XBL. Same as my username on here. I have several guys I play with regularly. This has turned in to my favorite game, since the Texags crew that played Battlefield Bad Company, back in the day. There is a learning curve, and sometimes it seems like you aren't doing anything "productive" by not running and gunning. However, that is not necessarily the point to this game. I love the strategy and working together.

I recently got into playing armor and damn it is a good time if you can roll with a couple good buddies.

I started off playing A LOT of AT and satchel charge a lot of tanks so it makes me extra paranoid when I'm slow rolling near hedgerows.
