I've been addicted for a couple months now. Playing on PC/Steam.
I haven't played a FPS regularly since Counter-Strike nearly 20 years ago… for a variety of reasons but frequently because nothing else compared and I was always disappointed.
This reminds me of CS, and goes way beyond.
It is not without flaws, and some of them get frustrating, but as mentioned above, it is actively being developed and at least right now it avoids subscriptions and DLC.
When I've had good squads, it might be the best game I've ever played. It's still fun even if the squad is bad, but you basically have to come up with alternative goals for yourself and just choose to do your own thing to influence the fight… medic in particular is a role where you can just follow a herd and stay busy and productive all game even if your squad is horrible.
My tips for new players:
- The guides I saw said to pick Rifleman first until you get a feel for the game. I disagree. I say you should pick Support. Just stick with your squad leader and drop supplies when he says to. Tell him you're new but you're willing to do whatever he says. He will be much more willing to help you and give advice because you're taking initiative to play a helpful role. Riflemen are worthless on a squad unless they're highly skilled players. As a support, you will learn a lot of how the game gets played just shadowing a good squad leader. You'll see where garrisons need to get built and when it's appropriate to build fortifications. You can also use this as a test… if your squad leader has no clue what to do with you, you know it's time to pick a different squad. Also - leveling up to 3 in Support is extremely valuable due to the ability to drop explosive ammo for AT and Eng. People love you if you've got ammo when they need it.
- Jump on an empty server and practice driving before you try in a live game. It is not easy (at least on PC, not sure about consoles). Practice on both tanks and trucks. Practice driving over different obstacles and see what can get you stuck and how to look out for it. Getting a supply or transport truck stuck in a real game is a very very bad thing. Getting a tank stuck is even worse. Make your mistakes when it won't matter.
- Similarly, if you think you're ready to try your hand at squad lead or spotter or tank commander, watch guides and practice those mechanics on an empty server. And on this note, I recommend watching a guide and stepping up early. You'll frequently find yourself in situations where your squad lead bails and no one wants to do it. Know the basic mechanics and step up… just tell them you're new and if they gripe, humbly offer to step down. 9 times out of 10, they won't want to and even if you're mediocre, a squad that's getting OPs built is much better than a squad that isn't.
- Don't pick Spotter ever. (Because I want it)
