Setting up private VPN

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I admit, I look forward to the day tech becomes libertarian again, instead of fascist, but I suppose those days could be gone.

"Old man ranting at clouds aside", I have several fairly secure locations, with good internet access - one with a company I trust to honor their contracts, and which is very reasonable about the price for speed.

I'm mainly looking for a VPN to use on hotel WiFi etc. I have a dedicated IP on PIA but it still doesn't seem to work right.

Any suggestions?

I run an OpenVPN server on a Linux machine at my house, mainly for use when I'm traveling and have to rely on questionable networks (hotels, airports). Purpose is twofold... encrypt all traffic until it gets back to a trusted location for relay back out to the internet, and also to access other resources on my home network (security cameras, etc.).

There are pretty good how-to guides on setting it up from scratch. The networking / routing configuration is probably the hardest step for someone unfamiliar with such things. Also fairly easy steps to set up security certs for authentication, assuming that you want something more secure than simple username/password.

Plenty of OoenVPN client options for most imaginable flavors of devices / OS's.

I also believe that many home-grade routers can host OpenVPN server functionality... likely easier to set up than rolling your own.
