Setting up home office from scratch.

About to pull the trigger on a 2021 iMac but also need access to a machine running Windows less than 10% of the time.

What is the solution for this?

-Performance of windows machine is not an issue. Will only be used to log in to a web portal where a windows based browser is required.

-Is there some sort of plugin to display the output of the windows machine in a separate window on iMac screen in native resolution?

I run Windows in a VM (virtual machine) on my Mac for work. I use Parallels for the VM. Works great.

Incredible that there's still apps out there requiring a windows browser. Do you have to use internet explorer or what? If that's the case they need to fix their *****

What are the circumstances around that? Now I'm curious.

I can't tell from your post if you're looking for a remote access solution to log into a separate, existing Windows computer, or if your looking to run a Windows virtual machine on your Mac.

If you're accessing a separate computer, Microsoft Remote Desktop or Chrome Remote Desktop will do the job.

If you need a virtual machine, Parallels is probably the best option, but it does cost like 80 bucks. VirtualBox can be set up for free, but it's not nearly as streamlined as Paralleles.

My organization has a significant number of internal applications and websites that still require older versions of Internet Explorer to run. It is maddening, but IT is finally working on moving the most commonly used ones away from those requirements.

Yeah, I feel like I need a reference doc for what browser works best for each internal site.....

Web portal requires a windows machine for whatever reason. Cant logon with iOS. iT said no. Tried anyway. Didn't work.

As soon as I get all this up and running they will fix the issue. Sure of that though.

You can install Windows Remote Desktop (https://apps.apple.com/us/app/microsoft-remote-desktop/id1295203466?mt=12) from the Apple App Store. Then you can remote into the Windows machine from your iMac.

I do this daily for work as I have a nice Mac Pro and remote into my work laptop. Works great.

One issue though is you will need to make sure remote desktop is enabled on the windows machine. If this is a work computer and it's locked down like you say, it's possible you won't be able to remote into it. A lot of organizations disable that as it's a possible security threat. If you've got another computer (windows or mac), you can try it now before you buy the iMac.
