How long do you want to ignore this user?
Finally got my PS5 last month. I skipped PS4 so didn't play a lot of classic games for that console. I noticed FO4 is free on PS Plus. I started the game and am pretty close to the beginning. We got to Sanctuary and I went to help those other people and they told me to find a Raider camp and wipe them out, but when I went I was WAY outgunned. Give me your best advice for what to do in that point in the game WITHOUT spoilers. I don't know how I've avoided spoilers to this point but I honestly don't know where the story goes and I'd like to keep it that way.

A few questions:
What do you have for a weapon?
Have you spent any of your talents?
What difficulty are you playing on?

Some tips:
- Sneak is your friend. Sneak sniper is always a fun first time build.
- Use VATS when in close quarters, especially for those damned flies.
- Junk is more valuable than weapons sometimes. Loot everything.
- You can start building the settlement at Sanctuary without going anywhere, just talk to Codsworth. It'll help you do some quick mods on your weapons once you start scrapping things there.
- Psycho is your friend, Psychobuff is even more fun. Just be careful you have some Addictol if you use it too much or don't have the talent.
- Download Sim Settlements (I believe it's available for PS4/PS5).
- Sometimes it's fun to just point the compass in a random direction and just go. If you die too many times, stop going that way.

And if none of the above work, there's always the "Come back later" strategy. That'll happen quite a few times during your play through.

Also, when you're in a settlement and go into build view, you can use your Use/Activate control to scrap items that are laying around, or that you have dumped from your inventory. I hated just having a bunch of junk in my workbench, so I manually scrapped (eventually found a mod where I can throw junk in, and it scraps them for me).

Visit some of the other locations in the northwestern part of the map--say west of Tenpines Bluff and north of the Corvega factory. Most of the stuff in that area is low enough level to be reasonably doable at most levels.

Also, every new thing you place in a settlement gives you a little bit of XP. If you feel a little underpowered, collect a bunch of junk and start building.

Just generally, in FO games wandering around and killing looting enemies will get you the XP and weapons and armor you need to accomplish your quests. Save you game often and you never know when you'll run across something that'll smash you flat. Sneaky sniping is the best way to punch above your weight because of the damage bonuses.

VATS is your friend. Use it at the opening of every fight and whenever possible.

I love a Luck build. It creates some amusing situations. Either with pistols or rifles.

The harder you make the game, the more often you will find Legendary Loot. Guns that fire two projectiles at once will do some killer damage.

Get a follower. I love Dogmeat as a follower because he helps slow down ghouls.

Explore, explore, explore. Look everywhere. Find magazines to give you small buffs. Collect any adhesive you find. Collect all ammo you find.

Save often.

Look through the perks and plan your build, early.

Turn on Diamond City Radio. I mean, it's not Fallout 4 without wandering the wasteland listening to to that great music!

Man, now I kind of want to go back to it. I guess 500 hours just didn't scratch the itch completely.

Played it during the freeze. Kinda seemed appropriate

Here's a tip - you don't have to keep helping the settlers that Preston Garvey keeps whining about.

I thought there was a trick to start one but not finish so you wouldn't get another. It's been a while.

Explosive rounds on an automatic rifle when you have perks in both is chaos. Great for blowing the legs off of ghouls, terrible if you're still shooting and hit something at your feet.

Which reminds me, for ghouls, use VATS and target a leg. Makes life easier in the beginning.

And that robot boss fight is hell (not a spoiler, just a warning), but it's nice to have a boss that actually challenges you. First time I did it, I was a drug-free sneak/sniper. That doesn't fair well in that particular encounter.

By the way, if you ever get bored of the base game, survival mode makes it a completely different game and it's a lot of fun.

Definitely at the beginning. Nothing sucks like waking up to an infection and you don't have any antibiotics. Had that happen my first playthrough. It ended badly. I ended up having to fully restart.

My only gripe with survival mode is that beds were so plentiful. I'd almost wished they made it so that you can only rest if you are at a bed in your settlement (or a rented bad) rather than just any bed/sleeping bag.

Exact same for Skyrim, except it's sneak archer. "Ok, just this one mob I'll do it on. Ok, just this one cave. Eh, screw it; I've already gone too deep into the spec"

My last playthrough I forced myself into an automatic/explosives build by not spending talent points in those perks. Also no lockpicking/hacking. I'd like to give PowerArmor Melee build a shot one day, but haven't given it a go yet.

Is Tinker Tom's Special the best base sniper rifle to spec out? What others could you look at for best with a sneak sniper build?

I had a plasma rifle that shot two projectiles... wrecked fools.

Preston Garvey quests repeat themselves. Don't bother unless you need XP.

When it comes to building, the world has a set height you cannot build above. Therefore, the tallest tower you can build is at the settlement on the beach (forget its name, but you'll know it when you see it).

The best perk you can get if you're a builder is the overencumbered fast travel. Even if you're not building a lot, it helps just because there's so much damn loot in the game.

Any potential spoilers aside, I've never found the fun in games like this to be in the main mission. There's so much to explore and so many great side areas/missions. Come to think of it, I don't think I ever actually finished the main story.

I'm slowly working through the main story at the moment. I took a break though at some point in the main line and 99%+ explored the map instead. It's kind of interesting because there were definitely a place or 2 I had 'cleared' already (I can't recall if they switched to [CLEARED] or not) that you go back to in the main quest depending on your path.

Thank you guys for the wealth of advice! Yesterday I was running around Diamond City and met the Brotherhood of Steel or something like that and went with a dude to raid a bunker and get a transmission antenna or something. I killed so many synths and stole SO many of their synth gun things and fusion cells that I had too much weight and had to WALK back to Sanctuary from DC. It sucked but I have so much crap.

I keep on being asked to join different cult/groups etc. Should I accept any of them? All of them? None?

The one mod plug that I'd make (I don't know if this is on PS4 or XBox, though) is for Salvage Beacons. Lets you create, well, salvage beacons - if you're stripping the entire Corvega plant of all of its lootable items and you get way overloaded, shove your junk into an empty container along with a salvage beacon. One of your settlements will dispatch a settler to mosey over, pick it up, and haul it back to base for you.

You will have to make a decision on which faction to go with and that will determine the outcome of the game. Save it so you can make the other choices once you finish.

The Far Harbor DLC is very good.

The others, not so much.

Join them all. You'll get to a point with them where if you choose to continue it will cause you to be hated by the other faction(s).

You walked to Sanctuary from DC? Are you in survival mode?

And that was a really long walk, If only there was a place nearby that you can turn into a settlement...
mickeyrig06sq3
How long do you want to ignore this user?
There's a few dozen places spread around the map that can be settlements. Some require pre-quests, some you just need to go Hulk Smash mode and clear out the undesirables. To claim a settlement, kill all the bad guys, and then try to use the workbench in it. It'll either drop you into build mode, tell you that there's enemies there, or it'll say you're not aligned with the settlement (need to be given pre-quest).

Why ask? It's an RPG. Play it how you want to play it and enjoy the rewards or consequences. That's the fun of playing the game!
