How long do you want to ignore this user?
I had two people from my contacts send me screenshots of incoming calls coming from my number and I had incoming calls from them but they didn't dial me and I didn't dial them. I was sitting on the couch and not on my phone at all when the calls were placed.

So I start looking into this and find out, after dialing *#62# , that my iPhones is being forwarded to a number I don't know. I have call forwarding turned off under settings on my iPhone. I called my carrier and Apple; the carrier didn't show the calls on the call logs and Apple just recommended a factory reset.

TIA for any info on this.

I think the random calls is more of a spam thing. I have not had it happen in a while, but did have the missed call thing where when I called the number back the random person on other end said they had missed calls from me. Much less prevalent these days as the carriers are getting better at this.

On the *#62# information, that unknown number is probably the carrier setting number for voicemail. Just checked mine and confirmed it's the ATT number for voicemail. If you disable or change, your voicemail will no longer work.

It is interesting that the spam calls are from your contacts. I agree with the above, the call forwarding thing is probably voicemail, and spammers have been using real numbers for their calls. But seems highly coincidental they picked a number that's in your contacts. Butt dial? I don't know how, but my father in law manages to butt dial me at least once a month.

I have seen this happening it's spammers spoofing your phone number and calling a series of people.

Yep, has happened to me before. A few times a year I'll get a call, usually from an older person, and they'll say "Hey, you called me, calling you back" And then I have to explain that someone spoofed my number.

One day a year or two ago was particularly bad and I got 7-10 call backs in a day.

This sounds a bit different than a random stranger in your area code getting a spoofed call from you. It's interesting that the calls went to two people that were in your contacts.

I had the same thing happen to me 4-5 times with the same person... At some point I talked to her about what was going on and I guess she just blocked my number or added it to her contacts with "don't answer" on it.

It's called call spoofing. Anyone can do it. It's a big feat, but the FCC needs to implement a plan for some call authentication system that all carriers have to adopt.l.

It's so bad that I've been called by my own number and my mother.

The best course of action at the moment is paying for a robocall blocker. I use RoboKill which now has call forwarding, so any unknown number not saved in my contacts gets routed to a robot. The caller must state their name and business and then the AI will determine if the person is legit and route the call back to me to answer. If it thinks it's spam when it's legit, I can always go back and listen to the recording. It's basically a robo secretary that answers for you.
