TV Lifespan?

What are y'all getting out of your TVs these days in terms of lifespan?

I just recently had my first modern (flat, LED, smart, etc) TV go out this past week. This was a Samsung I bought in early 2013ish and had been used a primary tv since. So 5.5 years. Already replaced it, but am keeping it to open up and try to fix when I have time. Couldn't pass up an opportunity to jump into the world of 4k.

My first flatscreen is still kicking in my son's room at about 12 years old. It's a cheap-o Westinghouse. Also, have a Mitsubishi DLP in the garage on it's second bulb, but still chugging along.

I'm sure there's tracked data that says otherwise, but in my personal anecdotal experience, nothing Samsung lasts as long as it should. Literally everything I've ever owned, from TVs to phones, to washing machines has crapped out well before I thought a "high-end" product should have. I avoid them like the plague now.

I bought a 1080p 50" Samsung plasma in '08 that is still going strong. It's been our primary TV the entire time and has tons of hours on it.

I still have my first LCD. It's a 32" 720P Sony from 2005 I think. It's at my parents house in the room that my kids use. I also still have the 32" Sharp LCD 1080P I bought shortly after. It's in my guest room. I still have the 50" Panny Plasma I bought in 2010. It's in my bedroom. I bought a 60" Samsung LED LCD in 2009 that crapped out in 2013. I replaced the Sammy with a 65" Vizio P series in the living room that is still going strong. Waiting on OLED prices to come down a little more, then I'll probably do some shuffling around.

All that to say, I agree with bigboykin regarding Samsung. At least as far as TVs go. I've had pretty good luck with their refrigerators so far though.

My Samsung ln52a550 (Not sure why the hell I know the model number after all these years) is still running since 2008.

The last couple weeks it will turn on to a green fuzzy screen with a terribly loud noise about 10% of the time, but it resets itself after about 20 seconds and the works fine.

I assume it's on its way out, so I'm shopping for a 4k now.

More than 10 years, not bad for a clearance tv deal, got it for $1250.

Seems like 10 years is the average lifespan and always has been in my experience. Kinda ridiculous if it only lasts 5 years IMO.

The Philips I bought 10 years ago is still going strong. I had to replace the LCD controller board after a lightning strike but it's hard to blame that on the TV. Only a $20 repair.

Samsung I bought early last year is still fine of course.

2003 JVC widescreen CRT TV has no problems. Neither does the (24"?) Toshiba that's a year newer, or the smaller Hitachi that was made in 1982.

50" Pioneer Elite is still going strong in my game room (~10 years old)
40" Samsung LCD crapped out after about 6 years. Just replaced with a 50" Toshiba special (Master bedroom)
60" Vizio is still working 5 years in, though I had to have the main board replaced under warranty about 6 months in.

Does anyone still have a panasonic plasma? That is still our primary TV.

Just wondering when I need to make the leap to a newer TV

10+ years on a 40" Samsung. I had to replace the capacitors to resurrect it once about 6 years ago.

When it breaks would be my answer. Sounds like it's a pretty good TV.

My parents have one but I don't think it's a Panasonic. I want to say they got it around 2006? It has HDMI issues so they have to use component to hook up to their cable box. Dad's replacing it right around Super Bowl time.

I have a 12 yr old 65" DLP, just bought a new bulb for $28 dollars. I don't think that thing will ever die.

Have one that is 12 years old. Still running good.

We have the following (mostly old relics):

55" HDTV rear projection (CRT) unit that was purchased in 2003, still going strong.

35" tube TV that is about 20 years old, still going strong (although only used by grandkids for video games).

17" tube TV about 15 years old, still going strong. This one is in the bathroom, normally used only in the morning while getting ready for work.

2 flatscreen TVs (LED), the oldest is only about 6 years old.

Will be getting rid of the tube TVs within the next couple of years as we will be selling our home and downsizing for retirement.

We have a 60" as well. Not sure what year we bought it but it was the last production year. 2013ish. The picture is still incredible.

Coming up on 10 years for my 46" Samsung. Honest truth, only reason I'm thinking of replacing it is for a larger size. Hoping Samsung still makes TVs like this.

I still have my 48" Panasonic Plasma that I bought the week after I bought my house. That was Dec 2007. The thing weighs a ton but still works great.

Our main TV is still my 50" Samsung plasma I bought in Feb 09. TV still has a great picture although suffers from burn in when my wife would leave the news on for hours at a time.

My 2008 samsung LNT4053H broke in 2014 but I replaced the capacitors on the power board and it's still working. Our 55" LG from 2012 is still working ok but we hardly use it.

50" Panny plasma bought in 07 still going strong. It's my left tv in the gameroom for football while the 54" Panny plasma I got in 2010 is the Xbox tv to the right.

My oldest flat panel is a 46" Samsung 3D LED that I bought in 2010 and it's still going strong in my bedroom.

I had a 65" Toshiba DLP that I had bought as a floor model in maybe 2006-2007 that died in 2013. Replaced it with a 70" Toshiba 3D LED that's still going strong.

Bought a Samsung LED in December 2008 and the quality is way better than the TV I gained on the wall when I bought my house.

Both TVs seem fine at the moment.

We have a few relics at home too.

1982 Hitachi 13" (color / buttons instead of knobs!)

2004 Toshiba, ~22"

2004 JVC, ~33" widescreen CRT that weighs more than me

2008 Philips 47" LCD at 1080p, repaired from a lightning strike and still doing fine

2017 Samsung 8 series, 65"

I have a 12 year old 52" Samsung that's still alive. I keep saying I'm going to replace it but it won't die.

Bought a Samsung 55" LCD tv in 2009 from Amazon.
