How long do you want to ignore this user?
I don't know if this is a dumb question or not, but I'm asking anyways

I've had a Samsung UN65KS800D FXZA for roughly 18 months. Bought it because it was decent reviews and 4K and I was replacing a dead tv.

Fast forward to now, moved old Apple TV to kids play room and bought a 4K Apple TV for room with said TV.

It won't display in HDR mode. Will only come up in 4K SDR.

My receiver is an Onkyo TX-SR373 and I believe it supports HDR.

I'm just wanting to see if I'm doing something wrong that's preventing it from displaying in HDR.

I've tried the tv on just dynamic picture mode and on HDR+ mode but it still won't work.

Appreciate any input

Try plugging the Apple TV DIRECTLY into the Samsung, that would eliminate the receiver as the problem. My Samsung used to display a message when it was receiving HDR content but I can't recall the last time I saw the message. Maybe a firmware update removed the message?

If removing the receiver from the chain makes no difference try swapping out your HDMI cable. It could be an older HDMI version 1.4 cable causing the issue.

I think it might be the cable but I'm not home to try at the moment.

However last night before I adjusted settings, it would try to switch then say unable to after a few seconds of a black screen and to try adjusting settings.

Once I turned on HDR+ and dynamic picture mode it would try to switch and just stay on a black screen, with no error message or anything.

I'm not exactly sure how old the cable is, but at least 3-4yrs

I'm not sure if I have any 2.0 cables but went ahead and ordered one off of amazon just in case

No such thing as a 2.0 cable. There is only HDMI, HDMI High Speed, and HDMI High Speed Certified Premium. I use the certified premium ones off Amazon.

Good information.....

Went ahead and cancelled the other cable and order a certified premium high speed

EDIT: to say, actually bought several new cables, just to replace all my old ones, and because they're cheap

It is probably the cable, for me it was my receiver.

For me my surround sound receiver can do 4k but not HDR. It is pretty annoying. Therefore I have my PS4 pro plugged directly into the TV so I can take advantage of HDR it just uses the TV speakers or a headset instead of surround sound.

There's no optical in on your receiver that you can take advantage of?

My TV also had a buried setting I had to find to turn on deep color hdr or something before the appletv 4K would play nice with it. It had to be set for each hdmi port I was using it too.

I thought the Apple TV was able to check your cable to make sure it supports HDR.

My Apple TV gave me an error saying to change the HDMI cable, not sure the exact message. But it was only when trying to watch Netflix. YouTube, WatchESPN, cbs, etc all worked fine. I swapped out the cable and all is well now. Changed out a monster cable (the tv and entertainment center were a gift from the FIL and he buys the crap Best Buy sells) for a cheap amazon one. Got a kick out of that...

It states that it will check your TV, not sure if that includes the cable or not

Ive got several new cables being delivered today....went ahead and decided to replace all the input/outputs on both main TV's. Plus, $35 order and got free one day delivery so they'll be here some time today.

Yes but my media closet is separate from the TV in the media room so they have to run through the attic. I would have to fish line a 30 foot optic cord-- no thanks!

New cables installed and still doesn't work.

Hooked directly to tv it works. So obviously that means it's a receiver issue.

Here's what I don't understand, the text below is direct from the Onkyo website on my receiver;

"Connect your players with just one cable linking to the TV for clean AV unit installation. HDMI terminals pass the latest video formats to your display, including those supporting 4K/60 Hz, HDR, BT.2020, and HDCP 2.2. There's also an Audio Return Channel (ARC) for amplifying TV broadcasts."

Appreciate it but I'm not that concerned with it, enough to buy a new receiver. It does 4K SDR fine and still think it should do HDR as well but can't figure it out

Any firmware updates available? Did you replace the cable between the source and the receiver as well as between the receiver and the TV?

Yes to both cables

No clue in firmware update

Check for firmware updates for your receiver. I'm not sure how often Onkyo pushes them, but it's something that they do.

Will do

At this point, I'd suggest reaching out to Onkyo for clarification. If 1) there is no firmware upgrade to fix this and 2) you can make it work by bypassing the receiver, then it's probably going to need Onkyo's help to fix.

As a side note, there are different levels of HDR. It shouldn't matter, as you're doing HDR and not HDR+ or Dolby Vision, but there's a big step up in the standards and amount of information being transmitted.
