Password Managers: which do you recommend?

I'm looking at getting a password manager that is cross platform since I've just been using the iCloud Keychain, which is a pain when I use my Windows laptop.

What password manager do you guys recommend? If seems like LastPass is the most popular, but I've also read some criticism and concern over LastPass due to previous hacks/exploits and the company who bought them, LogMeIn (not sure what the concern with this company is).

Anyways just wanted to ask the more tech minded people on Texags for your recommendations.

I use LastPass however I'm discovering it does not work well with iOS apps well at all. Works great on Android.

What's making you switch? 1Password seems to be pretty popular as well.

KeePass.

Open source, and free. I have the database saved in google drive. I can access it on my home computer, work computer, and android phone. I also have the program saved on a flash drive on my keychain, in case I'm ever missing any of those devices for some reason. Never tried the iOS app, but it seems to get good reviews.

I have used 1Password for at least 10 years and it is simply amazing. They have real customer service and answer emails and phone calls. So you get a glowing endorsement from a longtime customer.

I have their family license so Mr Dubi, the 2 kids, and my mom all use it too.

I used LastPass for a while, but switched to 1Password when they started their family plans.

The big thing I like about 1Password is it's an application that lives on your computer and has plugins for browsers. When I was using LastPass, it was essntially an app that ran in your browser. THis way I can store extra things like Wifi passwords, SSNs for family members, etc. I also really like the shared vaults concept. My wife and I share a vault for things like SSNs, Bank accounts, credit cards. But then I have my vault for my NewEgg and TexAgs account and she has pottery barn and stuff like that in hers.

It's built for macOS, but the recent 7.0 version really put the Windows version inline with the mac. I use it on my Work PC and have a "Work" vault to store work info in.

The windows version has been very robust for several years; I own both PC and mac licenses.

I've always been afraid to use one of these because it feels like I'm putting all my stuff in one place for a hack to get everything. Can someone explain why it's safe?

I guess it is possible, by my dropbox store is on dropbox with 2 factor authentication is a very long strong password. 1Password also encrypts their password store so even if my dropbox was hacked, they could not read it.

Now the new 1password allows you to use their cloud storage for your PW's or continue to use dropbox.

It's all encrypted, so even if somebody theoretically got access to your file, without your password, they can't read anything.

the services just act as a repository that each app syncs to/from.

They have a both: You can buy a license of the new release v7 or pay the monthly fee which includes the mobile apps. It sucks that i have to buy both PC & MAC licenses separately. Subscription lets you use both.

I have not see a v7 family license yet. I am currently running v4 of family.

From their recent announcement:

How do I get it?
To start enjoying the best version of 1Password ever built, grab it here:
Download 1Password 7
1Password 7 is included free for everyone with a 1Password membership. Simply unlock 1Password after downloading and you're good to go.
Those of you with a standalone license will be prompted to subscribe or purchase a license when 1Password 7 first opens. Licenses will cost $64.99 but are available during our launch special for only $49.99. Licenses are per-person, per-platform so you can use your single license on as many PCs as you have. 1Password 7 for Mac is a separate purchase.

Honestly... because I use 1Password at work. We looked at LastPass for business/enterprise but it was lacking (can't be more specific as I didn't lead that project).

1Password does everything I would need it to in a personal password vault, allows me to meld work/personal easily enough (while keeping them totally separate) and has a family offering so I could easily onboard and share with my wife.

I use Lastpass. I use it across all of my ios devices and have not noticed any problems or shortcomings. Lastpass with FaceID is the cat's meow.

1Password for families works great for us as a family with multiple iOS Mac and windows devices.

Another endorsement for 1Password. The first password manager I used was SplashID, back in the PalmOS days, then eWallet, and finally 1Password. Very happy with it. I briefly tried LastPass, but found 1Password to be easier to use. YMMV.

I use LastPass. I can confirm that the iOS integration with apps is mostly non existent. I almost always have to launch LP, copy the password, go back to the other app and paste.

On Android, it usually would pop up and fill in the credentials.

I may check out 1Password

If you do use one, just make sure your master password is very long; use a long phrase you can remember...

https://crambler.com/password-security-why-secure-passwords-need-length-over-complexity/

If you do that, no one is going to hack your master database. Brute forcing your master password is the only way they can get the info since the stored passwords are encrypted.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Roboform. I've been using it for years. I'm on the subscription and I have it on all my computers and it syncs between them.

If I was buying again today I'd probably get 1Password but I've been happy with Roboform.

Happy LastPass user here.

Looking forward to the improvements iOS 12 is bringing in terms of third party password manager integration.

We have the standard family account ($4/month) and we have version 7 of the app.

We get use of all the apps on all the platforms.

I wanted the one time family "license" like I have now. No monthly fees.

I have to buy both the PC license and the Mac license.

My comment was v7 does not offer a family multi platform "license".

Longtime 1Password user on iOS and macOS and couldn't be happier, database syncs seamlessly via iCloud. I bought the iPhone and desktop apps years ago, think they've moved to a subscription model for new users. If/when they cut me off from version updates I'll try out some of the open source options before committing to a recurring monthly fee.

Big integration improvements coming with iOS 12 which should make using these types of apps even easier:

Apple will now allow password manager applications to integrate with Password AutoFill in iOS 12. That means you'll have easier access to all your passwords when trying to sign into mobile websites and apps, not just those stored in iCloud Keychain.

This explains why LastPass doesn't work with iOS (see my earlier post). Christ, Apple is always two steps behind Android. Almost laughable.
