Hollywood studios join Disney to launch Movies Anywhere digital locker service

I got the email this morning, and I've already signed up with Movies Anywhere and transferred my movies over.

Aren't they launching their own broader streaming service anyway? Or is this it?

They're going to launch some kind of Netflix type service with Disney content, this is a way to access your digital copies of films on pretty much any device/platform.

I guess this means ultraviolet is dead?

when you link two services such as Amazon and Vudu, you get five free HD UV movies and they aren't shabby.

yea

FYI, I had to disconnect and reconnect VUDU a few times to get all purchases (really UV redemptions) to cross over.

Works great otherwise as I now have everything I've bought (or redeemed) available on my 4K Apple TV.

I am still missing 3 or 4 and have disconnected twice. I guess I will keep trying.

I'm super excited about this, I have a lot of movies on ultraviolet from bluray redemptions and have liked the service but felt it was always a little too complicated for the normal people to buy in to and its lack of access on itunes and amazon have always been its achilles heel. I've had a few marvel / disney movie codes I've redeemed before and was always very impressed how their Disney Movies Anywhere system had solved the biggest problem in buying digitally, which is making movies actually buy once use on any service. I'm really happy they have expanded this to not just disney and marvel movies.

I think this is going to be a huge game changer and finally push buying digitally more worthwhile than buying bluray or dvd.

Also good to remember that Vudu has a disc to digital at home service you can use which lets you scan the barcode of blurays you own at home so you can buy the digital copy of it for 2 dollars.

Some movies sold on Vudu aren't UV, so they won't be available outside of Vudu.

When you say barcode, do you mean you have to have the box? I got rid of a ton of DVD boxes.

Still missing my Hunger Games movies and one of my Ghost in the Shell movies which are all UV registered and linked in VUDU.

Edit: Looks like Lionsgate and Paramount wont allow the link. *******s.

I understand that. There were specific movies that I know should cross over that didn't and did after I did the disconnect/reconnect.

Seems like that shouldn't matter if they're from a participating studio, but I imagine it does.

I need to go back through my Ultraviolet copies and see if I have anything that hasn't come over, my library was probably 96% iTunes to start with.

I just bought the peanuts holiday ultra hd set from amazon and redeemed uv through vudu. That one is missing and i think it is warner bros which should be on board with movies anywhere.

This sounds right because I am missing all the Mission Impossible movies I got for free.

So if I'm understanding this correctly, if I have movies in iTunes or Vudu that aren't by one of the participating distributors, they won't show up in my Movies Anywhere account?

So far I have 17 in iTunes and 44 in Vudu that aren't showing up in MA. Have started to look through some of them and found that the few so far are Lionsgate, Fox and Paramount.

So I'll still have to use iTunes and Vudu as this won't really consolidate all of them...

Yes the barcode from the box. You aren't completely SOL though you can still do the same thing via the disc itself on your computer. Vudu has software you can download so it will check the disc itself and let you do it that way via computer. For DVD's its 5 dollars to convert to HD, 2 dollars for SD. For Blurays its 2 dollars to convert to HD.

Yeah I tried barcode on a lot of my mid 2000 DVD's with no success. I'll have to try the disc method.

Now if only this would feed into Plex... that would be sweet.

Yeah, I am mad at myself for believing this new service would address me having things on a few platforms. Having more on 1 platform but still needing to remember I have others doesn't really fix the problem. They should find a way to bring the title name so I at least know why it's not there.

the only problem i have is I have tv shows as well on itunes and vudu that don't show up on movies anywhere
