So my first Raspberry Pi is scheduled for delivery today and am looking for some advice.

I am hoping to play old SNES games as well as a few Mario Rom hacks (Super Dram World, etc.) on it. From what I have read, RetroPie seems to be a great SNES emulator, but can I also patch in Rom Hacks with RetroPie? Or would I need a separate emulator for that?

I am very uninformed about the capabilities of Raspberry Pi's but have a genius brother in law that is supposed to help me when it comes in. But I want to see if anyone knows the best route to accomplish both old games and rom hacks on one machine. Thanks for any advice or suggestions!

Here's a thread already on the Nerdery that has a lot of responses

Thanks, I did see that thread before, but didn't see anything about romhacks on there. But hypeiv might be right about just patching and loading like any other game. Really just wanted to see if anyone had any specific experience with it. Thanks again!

Well keep us posted with it, but the guys on that one should be a good resource. I may do one anyways, but certainly will do one if I don't get the snes classic

The "hacks" I have seen in the past came ready to load same as any other ROM. The ones I have played are RPGs that were never available in the US that a fans have hacked to be in English. Those you just download and play same as any other rom.

Which games? Is one of them Mother 3?

Rom hacks are generally separate rom files that you'd just give priority for loading on the Pi. They are generally coded according to file naming standard that you can search out. Often when you download a rom dump, it'll have multiple files (standard, hacked, different dated iterations) for the same game.

There's an entire Zelda trilogy based of SNES A Link to the Past engine. It's fairly popular.

Yes, most hacks come as bundled ROMs. Load them up as normal.

There are some fan translation patches but you'll run into those less.

Some games may give you issues. Final Fantasy 6 (3 in US) is notoriously tricky. Quickly found this reddit post below. All my emulation is via Windows or modded consoles so I won't have pi specific input:

Most of the SNES emulators in Retropie have issues with various games, actually. Starfox, Kirby Superstar, Kirby's Dream Land 3, among others. None of the emulators play those games even close to perfect.
