not sure what happened, i used to think it was just not registering at all. But I just noticed that if I'm typing in Microsoft edge, when I press c the cursor jumps up to the browser bar. nothing happens when using chrome. any ideas? i'm on a cheap little toshiba satelllite c75d-b7202 but it's only a year old and is currently my only laptop.

It sounds like a keyboard shortcut. Can you check settings and see if there's anything to do with hot keys, or keyboard shortcuts?

nope. I read somewhere that holding FN will show hotkeys at the top of the sreen, but it doesn't do anything

You can disable the hotkeys in CCleaner's option to control startup applications.
