I have narrowed down my dslr choices to d5200 and d5300. Who here has either and is the $250 price difference worth it. This is for my wife who is a relative novice with cameras and is set on a dslr camera with many of the features on these models. I plan on using it from time to time as well

This shows the differences between the two in an easy to see format.

The D5300 is going to be a better camera.

  • It has the newer Nikon sensor (Expeed 4 vs Expeed 3)
  • Higher native ISO limit (if shooting indoors in low light - adds more noise to picture though)
  • Larger back screen (3.2" vs 3")
  • Built in GPS
  • Weighs slightly less

Doing some additional research on the difference between the two sensors, it looks like Nikon removed some filters in D5300 which allow for sharper images.

Personally, I'd get the 5300. It's a newer version (although there's now the D5500 so it's not the newest in the entry lineup) that has more features and advancements.

If your wife starts to enjoy photography, it'll "last a little longer" before she wants to upgrade to something else than the D5200.

Thanks! Yeah I had looked at both for a while and if it was me I'd get the 5300 over the 5200 but my wife doesn't even bother with the settings on the point and shoot

Bottom line, both are great cameras and you will do well with either one. The lenses you put on each one matter much more than the camera.

Then why is she getting a DSLR?

Yep. If she doesn't bother with settings and you are just getting her the kit lenses, you aren't going to see appreciably better pics than you would with a Canon G16. Don't waste money on a DSLR that is going to collect dust on a shelf.
