How long do you want to ignore this user?
I'm far from a hard core gamer. Never play online. I almost exclusively play sports games (football, soccer and the occasional baseball & basketball). My one exception is GTA. I've had an affinity for that game since Vice City for its violence and general good gameplay. I have a PS4 and the new GTA but I also have 2 young kids and the language is a bit much to play when they are around. Looking for something with a similar feel to GTA minus the language. I really like the ability to play missions or pretty much just explore and do what I wish. Thoughts?

I would recommend Far Cry 4 (and Far Cry 3 for that matter). It's a totally different environment and feel than GTA because it's an FPS and you're stranded on an island or in a vast jungle rather than a city, but the premise of the gameplay is exactly the same.

Open world, lots of exploring, tons of new weapons and skills to earn, countless side quests, and a great campaign that lets you play at your own pace. Of course, the action is great too, and you can go full stealth or guns blazing, or anything in between. You pretty much choose how you play the game.

If you have the time to invest, pick it up and give it a try.

Oh, there is some language in the Far Cry games. I forgot about that. Not nearly as much as GTA though.

There's also some really gruesome subject matter (torture, cannibalism, ritualistic killings, etc.) that you'll run across in the Far Cry games. Not sure how you feel about that.

Get the new Batman game, you won't be disappointed. It's rated M, but just because it's pretty dark. No language that I've come across, and the violence isn't very graphic, just pretty dark.

Open World games safe for kids to watch are hard to come by. Far Cry 4 is great, but I wouldn't let my kid watch it. Safer options would be Infamous: Second Son and maybe Shadow of Mordor although it's still pretty violent.

Not worried about the violence. Kids don't watch me play (atleast not much) but they could very easily be in the room so they can hear everything.

Problem Solved!

And I would agree with FarCry4. The Witcher 3 is a great game but language and adult themes are pervasive throughout.

Might want to consider the Destiny collector's edition that will come out in September. Will be a great deal as it has the new DLC as well as the 2 previously released ones. I have played it since launch and haven't heard any language at all. The violence is very mild, especially considering it's a first person shooter.

It's an oldie but skyrim is still legitimately great even to this day.

The Assassin's Creed series isn't too bad language wise. I think so anyways, I never play a game thinking about if it's kid-appropriate.

Might even want to look into Kingdoms of Amalur.

Zelda games

Some of the recent Lego games

Can I just pick up Far Cry 4 or do I need to have played older versions?

The FarCry stories are not tied together. Game play and basic side quests/treasure hunts carry over.

I had played 1 and decided to pick up 4. After realizing my son had purchased 3 at some point, I played 3 for the month leading up to 4 coming out.

Maybe give Mass Effect a run out. I didn't think that was vulgar

Dying Light is an open world zombie survival game, excellent choice - probably one of the best to come out on the new consoles.
Watch Dogs is an open world story driven game - moderate popularity, but it has a definite GTA feel to it (especially driving)
FarCry 4 is another open world surival/adventure game - beautiful environment, large variety of vehicles, lots of fun

I'm the manager at the GameStop in Bryan, feel free to swing by, I'd be glad to show you a few games and see if I can find you something suitable.

I bought FC4 off Amazon prime based on this thread. No previous experience with the series. Got it yesterday and played about 2 hours last night.

I'm thoroughly enjoying it. Its really fun and very open. Watch out for elephants. They ****ed my world up a couple times.

I too had never played previous far cry titles, and really enjoyed FC4.

Skyrim, so much to do, open world, no cursing. Some blood. Wouldn't call it an "oldie" personally.

Sounds like this will be my next game purchase then, looks like its only $25-30 on Amazon

If your kids are old enough play Borderlands with them (can turn off language/gore)

I play with my 10- and 8-year-old boys and we have a blast.

Depending on the age of the kids, a WiiU with Super Mario 3D World is gold. Not really an answer to your question, but man, the good times we have had. I've played through every level of the game with my daughter, starting when she was about four and a half. It has up to four-player co-op and is extremely forgiving to noobs. We've also used to WiiU for Mario Galaxy 2, Mario 64, and many others.

As far as open-world games that you can play in good conscience with the kids around, isn't there a Lego game that's like Lego GTA? I think it's called Lego Undercover or something. Whichever one it is, I've heard good things.

The Long Dark (just started a thread on it).

Not only do you not have to worry about language, you can teach your kids about survival skills too.

I also like some of the Spiderman games, as it is sandbox in NYC, and NYC is pretty accurately portrayed. Kind of fun to climb the Empire State building and then swing down to Times Square.

Oh my goodness...just played Rocket League with my boys, I never laughed so hard playing a game.

Your kids are probably toddlers though right?

Edit: I realize these aren't even the types of games you are asking about, but just thought I'd share.

I can't even imagine trying to edit out Mister Torgue High-Five Flexington. That just isn't right.

Couch co-op (split screen)? How is it?

Fay Cry 4 has a lot of profanity, mostly in the cut scenes and on the radio while you are driving vehicles.

TW3 has language? Guess I'm not noticing that much. That would be my recommendation but all the FarCry talk hase wanting to play that later this Fall and then its Fallout time.

I agree with the sony gold headphones. I have daughers 8 and 11. I play BF4, Far Cry 4, GTA 5, witcher 3 etc. Sony golds are awesome. I let them know that some of the stuff I play is inappropriate, so when they walk in, they do with hesitation.

Not as much language, as extreme violence (e.g. decapitation or slicing a body in two and seeing a cross-section of their guts) and sex (most realistic breasts/nipples ever in videogame history, plus sex with a characters and strangers in a brothel... not a big deal if you are an adult, but if you have young kids, it is extremely inappropriate).

Couch co-op (split screen)? How is it?

It's vertical split screen, which I prefer over the horizontal split screen (when we play Borderlands I feel like I'm squinting to see everything), and I never felt like I had a limited spatial view.

The mechanics are easy to learn. Game play is fast. What makes it really enjoyable was playing with my boys. And that is the heart of my experience. Learning the controls, zipping past the ball, crazy shots, speeding around the arena, made for a lot of humorous moments. It was just pure fun. We're competitive, but with all the funny stuff happening it's just pure enjoyment even when losing.

I've only played with my two boys so I don't know what the online matches are like.

Buy a quality, comfortable headset and play whatever games you want. Saints Row IV was insanely fun (and inappropriate), but it's not realistic if you're looking for realism. Skyrim is amazing as well, and doesn't really have the language that the other games have.
