when I updated to IOS 8.3. Worked fine before updating from the previous IOS. Now everything on here is slow as molasses, especially texags. Plenty of space left and nothing wrong with my internet. iPad mini still works great after the update. Any ideas?

That sucks. I've had the opposite experience with an iPad 2 in our house - thought it was a significant improvement. I'll check and see if I did anything out of the ordinary when updating (can't recall).

I'm waiting on the new iPad to be announced. Hopefully it will be the rumored iPad Pro with the larger screen. Sorry this doesn't help you out. I bet it will be corrected in the next iOS update which may not be until they release iOS 9 in the fall.

Apple wants you to buy a new iPad, not use your old one. IMO they do crap like this on purpose.

My wife has an iPad 2. It worked just fine on iOS6.x. I had an iPhone with iOS7 and we could use Facetime just fine for several months after iOS7 was released. Then after and iOS7update, it suddenly stopped working.

When I finally updated her iPad to iOS7 she could not change the background b/c of some excuse from apple about the floating display effect (something like that) which was BS b/c the photo that she had been using worked just fine, but when she tried to switch, the new photo would not stretch/fit correctly and the old photo would no longer work either after she tried to change it back. (There is a 50-page thread on the apple tech forums about this very subject and apple never addressed it).

Now Safari regularly just stops working and is very slow. Pages updated and deleted all her files..
...do we need to talk about iTunes...uggg...

For being such a great hardware company, their software sucks as much as everyone else.

Try a soft reset. When my iPad or iPhone starts feeling sluggish, I do this while I'm charging overnight. Make sure you do "Reset all Settings" (NOT CONTENT).

The other option is If it still doesn't work, I plug into a computer and wipe it clean. Then I restore from a backup.

I had the same problems with my iPad 2 when I upgraded to iOS 8. I finally bit the bullet a couple of weeks ago and wiped it clean and did a restore from iTunes. It is better, but Safari still crashes a lot. It irritates me to no end that Apple operates on the philosophy that these devices are disposable.

I'm an old geezer and tech challenged, so what does this soft reset exactly deal with? I have some iTunes and lots of pics on here I'd hate to loose.

Just wait until you update to iOS 9 this fall! I can't believe they are still going to support it.

My wife's iPad 2 has basically turned to a brick, too. She's pretty bad about installing tons of crap and basically 'gremilns' every piece of technology she touches, but I get pretty tired of monkeying with her Apple stuff.

Android is the devil I know, Apple is a pain in my ass.

You don't lose any content (photos, music, apps, texts and emails) with "Reset all settings". You will have to re-enter the wifi password, possibly reapply your wallpaper and sign in to websites on Safari.

"Erase All Content and Settings" will wipe everything on your phone (or iPad).

Thanks, I'll give it a go.

Be sure you back up the device to iTunes right before you do the reset! If you rely on your last back up, you may lose some stuff (I rarely plug my iPad into the computer to do an iTunes back up). After you wipe the iPad clean, you'll plug it back into the computer, connect to iTunes, and do a system restore from the last back up (there is an option specifically for this in your iTunes account menu)

This is such an ignorant statement and/or reeks of Apple hate.

By your logic, that Dell PC I ran back in 1999 should be able to run the latest & greatest Windows operating systems, Steam games, and so on.

We all understand that computers age; their components fall into obsolescence as newer technology comes to market and software is then written to take advantage of that new tech. but not optimized (though will sometimes run) on older tech. We understand that the old stuff may run, just not well.

Now, tell me how this is any different for <insert your favorite tablet here>. Why should Apple be required to support newer OSes on older hardware (and keep it feeling as snappy as the day you bought it) into perpetuity?

Go on, I'll wait.

The hardware itself does not age very quickly. The components are probably rated for at least a few thousand hours of operation (and, in reality, will keep working much longer than that). This is almost certainly a software issue.

Anecdotally, I have also seen issues when updating the operating system of an iphone or mac mini.

The iPad 2 was released only 4 years ago. It absolutely should still work ... no questions. Why should someone spend a significant amount of money on something if they have to throw it away after a couple years?

(I don't own any iPad device ... I just think it is odd to suggest that a 4 year old tablet is no longer expected to function appropriately)

if your computer has pcie there is no reason you can't upgrade to a better gpu and play modern games. Lots of Steam games don't require water cooling hardware to run either.

And to answer your software compatability statement, have you ever heard of Linux? It's an OS that specializes in always supporting hardware. Android takes this philosophy and you can run android on practically anything. So, get off your fanboy throne and learn a thing or two.

I haven't updated mine in a good while (more than a year, Mebbe two). Don't even know what OS I'm using.
But I have noticed the battery seems to drain faster, and a recharge is slower than before as well. Can those issues be "fixed"?

8.4 comes out Tuesday, but might not help much. iOS9 is meant to be better for older devices, but thats not out until Sept.

Battery life does decrease over time. Not much you can do about that.

Thanks. So, at what point are they replaced? Cost?
