Just installed my new Xfinity wireless gateway modem/router. I had a modem with separate router previously. I wanted to keep my old router so I wouldn't have to set up a new wireless network so I just had the old router "bridged" to the new modem and things seem to be working fine.

However, it appears the wireless gateway modem is still broadcasting its own wireless signal. Do I need to somehow deactivate that so somebody can't tap into that network? Or is it a big deal? If I need to deactivate that signal, how do I do that?

There should be a setting to "Disable Broadcast of SSID" on the router "wireless" setup page or tab. If you can't locate it, you can always go to the IP assignment or MAC assignment and there should be a "Block all access except the following MAC addresses" or something like that. You wont list any MAC addresses so technically no one should be able to connect to it.

I'm guessing you can disable the wireless network completely on the gateway, which is what I would do. If you don't intend to use it, keep it from interfering with things.

You want to disable the radio, not just broadcast of the SSID.

How do I do this? is there a switch or something on the gateway modem?

Go to:
http://10.0.0.1/

Login to the Comcast cisco gateway and there should be an option to hide SSID. That is where you change SSID (you can still manually type it in on devices) as wifi PW from what the install tech set up.
