How long do you want to ignore this user?
I set up a Foscam FI8910W wireless camera at the house. I am able to connect and
view the camera using the Foscam app on my phone while connected to the home
wifi (Uverse). I'm not able to connect and view when I am not connect to the
home wifi. I'm guessing the ip address I'm connecting to (192.168) is an
internal ip address only valid when connected to the home wifi? Any advice on
settings to connect to the camera from outside of the home network would be
greatly appreciated.

You are right, the 192.168.0.0/16 network is not globally reachable. You will need to modify your router to open a port to allow access.

You will need to go open a port on your router for it.

Go to your camera and note its local IP address. Then set its HTTP port to something like 8090. It is high enough to not be a commonly used port and shouldn't interfere with any other services on your network.

Then go to your router and go to the port forwarding section. Set the port to the 8090 and the IP address for forwarding to the local IP address of your camera.

Then from outside the network, access the camera by using XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX:8090 where the IP address is your external IP address for your network. (google what's my IP address from inside your network to get this. It may occasionally change.)

Thanks Pro Sandy. They don't make this very user friendly. Further research shows they now offer a "plug & play" version.

Sandy is spot on. I have a Foscom that I monitor remotely. It came with pretty good instructions but you may have to do a web search for adjusting settings on your specific router.

When you forward this port you are going to be exposing your internal camera to anything the Internet can throw at it, so make real sure it's secure. Not only is your camera at risk, but someone breaking into its web server will then be able to launch attacks inside your network to your PCs and other devices.

When you figure this out will you post an update of what you did to make it work? I was trying to do this exact same thing a month or two ago (pre-baby) and never did get it working. The problem lies in the fact that I (and likely you too?) have a dynamic IP address, so that number is always changing. The instructions described opening s port on the router (but do you also have to open a port on a separate modem if you have one?) and using a dynamic DNS service to get past the ever changing IP address that you internet provider gives you.

It all makes sense to me on paper but I just never could figure out the exact steps to take to get it to work.

The IP is dynamic, but you can make the local IP static to minimize one of the two dynamic numbers. Most American ISPs rarely change your IP. Mine has only changed once in two years with my current ISP.

Your router should be the only thing that needs modifying as it controls the traffic and does the port mapping.

I run these at my house, and finally have them working just right! Got my Dad some for christmas - tried to hook them up, and cannot for the life of me figure out how I did it at my place the first time around.

I left my ip dynamic (mostly because I was just thankful they were working, and didnt want to push my luck.) That being said, Comcast has only reset my IP once since then, and all I have to do is change the ip address on the cams when that happens. Its pretty easy, and only happens every few months.
