I'm looking to get a cheap tablet for my son, but wondering why the price range is so wide on various Android tablets.

from my experiences with the tablets I played with in Shenzhen, the hardware is slow and the touchscreens are unresponsive. They have no updating or support to speak of and the roms can be buggy as hell.

Ehh.... maybe someone who has bought one could chime in, but as diggity said, I would assume they have cheap/potentially unreliable hardware and bad software.
If you're going for a budget tablet, my suggestion would be the Kindle Fire or 2012's Nexus 7.

You won't save money by buying a cheap Android tablet. The experience will be so frustrating your kid will lose interest In a few days and you'll be asking "why don't you play with that tablet I got you?" Get a Fire or Nexus 7. Either one is a tablet they'll actually use.

My boss got a very similar tablet as a door prize from a conference he attended. The tablet has a different company name on it, but the specs are the same. It is a piece of junk.

Yup. Another who has learned the hard way here. Crappy hardware, buggy software, no support/updates.

BTW, I have a 7" android 4.0 tab I'll sell you for $30.

In the last week I've seen 2 gen N7s for $150 (tiger direct) and kindle fire HDs for as low as $60. Both refurb, but still good deals. Even nook color HDs which I've seen for around $80 recently would be better than the knock offs, good hardware and xda has all the support/software you'd need if you are comfortable with mild root/hacking.

I have a rooted HP TouchPad if anyone is interested. I also have a Kindle Fire HD that I rarely use, but I'll probably hang on to it. I think the stock Fire is pretty weak, but once rooted it becomes serviceable.

7 inch display with just 800 x 480 pixels? Only 4 Gb of total memory?

That explains a lot of the cheap price. That display will look worse than the $75 digital picture frames they used to sell.

Lesson learned. The easy way.

If you're looking for a cheap tablet, get a refurb'd Samsung. You can often get them for a steal at Wal-Mart, and can insure it through Squaretrade for a few bucks a year.

Thanks for the tip, I'll look into that fta.

BTW, guys, this looks good to me. What am I missing. We're talking about a soon to be 6 year old, here.

Nevermind. Looks to be the exact same tablet, only kidified.

For a 6 year old, these are perfect. I have four daughters that all got one of these $59 tablets for Christmas and they work great! I don't know how long they will last, but hey... They're $59.

I use these for my remote controls for home automation and TVs. I have 5 of them laying around the house with a few wall mounted. They are not the fastest thing around but they do what I want very well.

I have asus and samsung tablets for the normal surfing, email, etc.

My 2 and 4 year olds each have a Kindle Fire. Those are the way to go rather than one of those cheap tablets.
