How long do you want to ignore this user?
http://www.hauppauge.com/site/products/data_hdpvr.html

I have some DVR recordings that I do not want to lose. Eventually I will run out of space so I need to somehow save the DVR recordings.. I have Uverse and I think they use some encription to make this difficult... However, I came across this device. Can anyone else give me some advice or tell me if this HD PVR will work??

Couple of things....

1. What are you wanting to save? reason I ask is most things are available through the on demand services and you can pretty easily find old aggie games. For the price you would spend for this you might be better off just buying the things you want.

2. It will work provided uverse has component outputs. Newer receivers are starting to come with hdmi only. Also there are some odd copy protection on certain channels. I don't know uverses policy on outputting all channels via component.

I couldn't get your link to open at my work, but I have this model of PVR, and it works fine.

Keep in mind, these hook up to your computer via USB, so you will need to be sure your PC is close enough to it, or get an extension USB cable. Also, your cable DVR needs to have component outputs, since HDMI probably won't work. Most of these devices are meant to record from game consoles which don't have the copyright issues a cable box with HDMI might have. Newer Hauppage models have HDMI inputs, so be aware.

Once the files are on your PC, you will need to convert, edit, and burn to a DVD/Bluray disc. Good luck!

Unless your DVR supports this natively there's almost no way it's worth doing it.

What is it you can't find elsewhere?

jagouar - good point, but eventually "on demand" will take down the show and it will be gone forever. I'd like to save seasons of my favorite shows so i don't have to spend $60 for a season dvd package...

I'd also like to save aggie games so I can watch them in the future if I wanted

labamisd - you didn't say whether you have uverse.. buti'm assuming you do and the device you showed me will work....if that is the case i'm going to buy that model off amazon..

Jefferson - i'd like to store a library of games / tv shows that I watch instead of searching for it on youtube, hulu, or buying dvds..

Just FYI, I don't have Uverse, I have satellite for TV. My DVR has both HDMI and component out.

darn... I'm looking for someone who has this device and has uverse. Uverse encrypts their video I believe and Direct tv / satellite providers do not... I suppose I can just return it if it doesn't work

oh.. I didn't realize that cable and a TiVo will get the recordings off my uverse dvr... interesting

Well that's the only real solution here. You can try video captures but the ****ty quality and time involved is a waste.

No provider's dvr is going to let you transfer recordings to a computer. Tivo lets you transfer to pc, convert to mobile, and burn to dvd.

thanks... i'll keep that in mind

Are the recordings marked copy once or copy freely?

I guess copy freely? They are still DRM files and you have to use the TiVo desktop software. You can transfer to PC, delete on TiVo, transfer recording back to TiVo. I never do anything though because I don't need\want to.

Not what you were asking for, but my hd homerun let's me record shows to any pc running Windows 7 media center. I pay an extra $2 a month for a cable card and I have as much or as little storage space as I like. Windows 7 media center is pretty slick, it has a guide and DVR function and can run as a server to play on extenders (a ps3 and a 360 on my case).

Otherwise, good luck!

It's a near certainty that in your leasing agreement with your TV provider you say you won't do exactly what you're trying to do.

Functionally I don't see how it's different than piracy. If you have game of thrones on your DVR and jump through hoops to transfer it to a hard drive, what's the mechanical difference between doing that and downloading a torrent of the entire show in 30 minutes? You will have the exact same bits saved on your computer.

Any way you slice it you're making a backup of shows when they don't want you to. Offloading the recordings you already have is likely extremely difficult and time consuming. I'm not seeing what the payoff is.

i disagree 100%. As a paid user I should be allowed to record and save as much or as little as I choose. Why should someone be limited by what Uverse/comcast/time warner/etc. provides them?? If the companies feel like adding storage space is stealing then I challenge them to come up with a DVR w/ more storage space... hard drives are cheaper and can hold more space than ever before...

No reason why I should be limited to what my dvr holds. I shouldn't have to delete shows if i don't want to.

i know i was joking about using a VCR, but how is that any different that what the OP is wanting. VCR recordings allow for unlimited (as unlimited as a tape can be) viewings of a show. Its also removable storage that could be taken and viewed somewhere else. If i pay for cable, then i should be able to record whatever i want, however and want, and watch it whenever i want. As long as I am not reproducing it for sale, I don't see a problem.

you are paying for several hundred hours of programming per day, but the most a single person could conceivably watch in one day is 24 hrs, less than that when you count work, sleep, etc. Why should i not be able to store all the wasted time that I cannot watch in a normal day? I paid for it.

so they are still whatever the broadcaster flags them as. I figured that WMC and everything else using a cable card will have the same restrictions. The good news is on a PC getting extra space isn't an issue.

Bumping this thread to see if there's any new products out there. A network started running reruns of a TV show ("Ed") that ran from like 2000-2005. They have not released these on DVD, it's not available for streaming anywhere that I can find, and I don't think it is carried by any on demand services. Now the network ran the whole series and is now dropping the show.

I have the all on my DVR, which is a fine solution until it inevitably craps out and ATT sends me a new one or I have to reset the thing. I would love to buy them, but that doesn't seem to be an option. Any ideas on how to get them saved digitally?

Not cheap but you can use these to downgrade hdmi protection to a breakable one. With easily available software you can download anything your cable/TV provider shows.

An above HDFury device, combined with an HDMI capture device (such as www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16815158387 which I've used before) can work.Note, this one is Windows Only.

However, if component capture is good enough (varies based on the DVR box output; component supports 1080p but not all boxes allow full resolution output) then it's significantly simpler, as there's no encryption on the component ports (5x RCA style connections; 3 video, 2 audio)

The above device can record from Component at 1080p and HDMI (without encryption) at 1080p as well. This is what I use now, which requires a bit more fiddling to get working, but delivers a very powerful piece of hardware with capabilities beyond what I use it for -> http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/686585-REG/Blackmagic_Design_BINTSSHU_Intensity_Shuttle.html
