With all the media server/media center/HTPC talk over the past couple weeks, I got a little ambitious to play with XBMC.

I downloaded XBMC to my laptop (W7) and am trying to stream to my ps3 in the living room. I'm accessing the media through an external hdd. On my ps3, I can see the XBMC server but can only see a music and videos folder, not a pictures folder. Also, when I select a song to play, it wont start for maybe 30 seconds or longer.

So my questions are:
1. How can I see a pictures folder?
2. What could be the cause of such a long delay?


I ultimately want to put XBMC on my raspberry pi, so I have it on my laptop to get the hang of things. TIA

XBMC isn't really a streaming server. It's for playback.

I had a similar problem accessing content on my PC from the PS3 and I had to open Windows Media Player and allow it to "see" the new content on my HDD before the PS3 would see it.

that probably doesn't help though.....

Tversity has been great for streaming to my PS3.

I thought XBMC was a playback interface?

Haha, so I guess XBMC isn't much of a streaming software as much as it is for playback.


Anyone have any free recommendations for a good streaming software? TVersity looked pretty neat, but I want to try the free stuff first.

If you want to use the PS3, try installing PS3 Media Server.

You install it on the computer that holds all your media files, and then your PS3 will see that computer and let you see all the files from the PS3.

It's not nearly as clean as good XBMC setup, but it's free and will work with what you have right now.
