Find out how far you are from the node on the DSL.

I'm at 10,000 feet which is basically the max for DSL and I can't get above 2MB/s speed. The closer you are, the better the signal and speed you can obtain.

I'm switching to Uverse on Wednesday, 12MB/s for only $10/mo more. I just hope my wife can keep the installer from loading ATT bloatware onto my PC.

As far as service, my DSL has dropped maybe once in that time (and of course IKE). The support from ATT seems to have gotten a lot better compared to when I started 5-years ago. The Tier 2 tech support is of course always better but the answer the phone a lot quicker and seem to actually have a clue instead of reading from a script.

AT&T does have a bandwidth cap monthly as well, or at least they did when I moved in December. It is a pretty high cap, 30 gigs or something, but if you download big files, games, or stream all the time that may become an issue.

With AT&T, the elite is $19.99/mo for 12 months if you bundle home phone service (without home phone is $34.95 for 6 months and then $48 after the 6 months is up). After that, you should be able to call and renew at the new subscriber rate, but usually it is forcing you into another 12 month contract. I have done that the past two years no problem.

As far as service reliability I have issues with my modem flashing an orange middle light in which the internet has briefly gone out. After 15-30 seconds it works again, but then shortly thereafter does it again. I don't know if this is a service issue or a modem issue. The modem is about 5 years old and possibly more. I can't remember if I brought it with me in the move or not.

Also, the bandwidth cap is 150GB for AT&T. I checked my usage and I only use 10-12/month, so unless you stream all the time, that shouldn't be an issue.

If you're not going to have a home phone, I think I would go TWC because I think you could probably get faster speed for the $48/mo once the special rate runs out.

My AT&T Elite DSL gets about 2.4Mbps, pathetic for premium DSL in 2012.

Call tech support and ask for Tier 2. You're likely very far from the node/tie-in/whatever it's called and you'll never get faster DSL Speed.

Go to the ATT store and buy a new power supply for $10. I had my 2nd modem "fail" and after some research found out the older PS are prone to die after a few years. The new ones are supposed to be better.

I bought a new PS and it's been running fine again for over a year.
