Any old UIL nerds have an HP-32sii gathering dust that they wanna part with?

Due to an unfortunate spill, mine is no longer in a functioning condition.

Thanks.

Couldn't bare to part with it for anything less than $3200.

This makes me wonder where mine is. Pretty sure I can find my 48 though.

48 located, I think I'm going to take it to work and put it on my desk to blow the minds of the young bucks.

Wish I still had one. My 35s just isn't the same...

I have two, one that I won't give up and one that I might (but no longer turns on).

Perhaps there's a repair service that could take two broken ones and make a working one out of it?

And I don't know if it matters to you, but mine are both the silver/grey versions, not the orange/purple.

Don't care all that much about colors. If you can find a repair shop and take care of getting it fixed, I'm interested. But I'd rather not deal with the hassle myself when I know ready-to-go units are out there. Thanks though!

I still have my slide rule. (K&E duplex deci-trig)

What, pray tell, is an HP-32sii?

Does sii = super integers intangled?

Also, have Dad's 24" Duplex deci-trig.

Badass (Can that word be applied to a calculator? I say yes.) RPN scientific calculator from Hewlett Packard. It was standard issue for UIL Calculator competitors in the 90's.

And in the 2000's.

You could tell who was serious and who wasn't by their calculators. TI-8X graphing calc meant they weren't a threat.

It's funny how posture and image were so important...

I came up with an eff-with-em strategy before TMSCA State / UIL District my senior year. The standard approach to the test was to start on page 1 and work all the 'crunchers' first. I modified that slightly, starting on page 3. The structure of the page content being what it was, this meant I was the first in the room to turn the page by a solid margin, and everyone else would think I'd done so having started on page 1. Huge, huge nerd psychological advantage

(Edit: And several rivals told me after the district test that it did, indeed, get to 'em... hehe)

A few months ago I spent a lot of time trying to get an HP 48GX emulator working on my PC. Right after I finally got it working I remembered I had an actual 48GX in my desk less than two feet from the PC.

Folks did that 'start a couple pages later' thing in practice enough that I got numb to it.

I don't think anyone tried that at state my senior year. If they did they were far enough away that I couldn't hear them.
Keegan99

Interesting that it was common by then. NO ONE did it in '95. Maybe I should consider myself an innovator

I still have my TI-85 and HP48G, though I don't use them anymore. I do have the 48G iPhone app, though.

Our coach used it to push people. He'd make someone a 'rabbit' and have them skip X problems per page of crunchers every now and then without telling the rest of the team.

It definitely worked, I was down to less than 10 minutes on number crunchers by the time I was a senior.

Our TMSCA/MathCounts team always went with Casios...I guess the coaches didn't know or like RPN. I've heard its much faster but I was never a calculator competitor anyway. Number Sense, Math, and Science all the way. I never did UIL though.

One could get away with non RPN in junior high. In high school it was pretty much a necessity, though.

I use my almost 30 y.o. HP 41CX every day. Somewhere I have a bar code reader that plugs into it and a book of bar code programs.

there are few greater pleasures in life than being the first in a crowded room to flip over (and slam) a number sense exam

In 8th grade at one of the first contests of the year, prior to the Number Sense exam, the PA announcer said that contestants were to stand up next to their desks when the exam was over.

Five minutes into the test, I set my pen down and stood up.

That got some interesting reactions.

Now we're earning our right to post on the nerdery. I showed up to the TMSCA calc competition at UTSA and broke out my slide rule. The proctor stopped at my desk, shook his head and said "It's gonna be a long day for you son"

This thread is great. Some true nerds in here. I was a proud district champion in calculator, math, and number sense. The trifecta

Also +1 for this comment

I'm a proud mathlete. I win the nerd award at work (among a bunch of engineers) by bringing up my calculator championship.

This reminds me...freshman year I went to a scholarship banquet where they announced all our names. They called out one kid and it turns out I was sitting next to him. I immediately flashed back to middle school, where I had heard his name called literally dozens of times at TMSCA meets. I asked him about it and he sheepishly admitted it was him. Small world.

It is funny how much of the number sense skills still stick in your mind over 20 years later. I still impress the non math types by doing simple multiplication tricks in my head.

My HP28s still sits on my desk and gets used regularly.

I used the skip a cruncher strategy as well, except I would just skip the last cruncher on each of the first two pages and come back to them after I finished the rest.

At state my senior year I did the same strategy, but forgot to go back and do the last cruncher on the second page. Doh. Still won 4A, but the 5A champ beat me by a point.

Wooo! Got one for (relatively) cheap on eBay thanks to a seller who listed the item with "32S ii" in the title and not "32sii".
