Onkyo HDMI problem

How long do you want to ignore this user?
I have an Onkyo HT S9100 THX receiver hooked up to my cable box through the default HDMI IN 3 port.

Apparently Onkyo has a lot of issues with HDMI ports. That port has gradually quit working after two years (I had another Onkyo do the same thing. I'm a slow learner.)

1. My question: Since there are four HDMI IN ports and I am using only one for the cable box, can I (if I can figure out the instructions) reassign another port, say the HDMI IN 4, to the cable box?

2. Also, I had my old receiver hooked up some other way, not HDMI. I remember that I had an optical cable from the cable box to the receiver, but I don't remember how I had the cable box hooked up to the TV. Would that still give me HD, and what connection do you suppose I used?

I don't really know much about this, so please don't be too technical. Thanks very much.

The inputs are just inputs, whatever name or label assigned doesn't matter.

Well, I've got Time Warner coming out Monday to look at the cable box, though I don't think that's it.

I have had onkyo receiver for over 15 years and never had an issue with one. Not to say there isn't any but i wouldn't hesitate to recommend the brand.

Easily. As stated one HDMI port is the same is the next.

the best option will be to use another HDMI slot if available.

I believe you live in the SA area? if you do and if you have any problems with TWC send me a PM.

I have 2 onkyos currently and can confirm hdmi issues with both. One has become almost unwatchable. I think they can be good, and overall it is a good brand, but unfortunately i will never be buying another onkyo.

wow...this is a little surprising..i've never even heard of this issue with Onkyo...but I've also never had to look it up for my own I guess

Onkyo seems to be recommended quite often on here as an affordable quality entry level receiver or htib solution

i'm sorry to hear that so many of you are having problems

I had a problem with my Onkyo last year that everything BUT the HDMI inputs stopped working. I did some research and found that it was a sign of one or more of the capacitors going out. I went ahead and replaced all the capacitors (don't remember how many there were), closed it up and its worked like new since. Maybe there is a similar solution for the HDMI ports?

I tried all the other HDMI ports and none worked at all. The one assigned to the Cable box works intermittently. The problem affects only the TWC HD channels, roughly the ones numbered 100-199. When I turn the channel to one of those, picture and sound come on intermittently and then the picture goes out (sound stays on) and "source not found" or some such comes on. Eventually a fuzzy gray screen with sound is all I get. I get all the other channels I subscribe to.

When I route the HDMI cable from the cable box directly to the TV, I get all the HD channels.

I have googled this issue and many, many, many similar complaints come up. There is a Youtube video showing how to replace the capacitors on a specific Onkyo model (much beyond my abilities); there is also an Ebay auction in which a guy is offering to fix your Onkyo 606 or whatever it is which is having HDMI issues.

As I said, TWC detected some problems in the cable box and is coming tomorrow morning, but I'm afraid the Onkyo has its own problems.

I have used Onkyo components for over 20 years, but if I have to replace this one, that will be two in the last four years. The last two I bought lasted just over two years and developed this issue.

And thank you for your offer, AgDev01.

haven't had any issues with my Onkyo receiver (it's about 3 years old now)

Welcome to the club!

My 606 started having HDMI issues after three years. Only one HDMI port worked, and it stopped transcribing my component signals to HDMI.

I tried this, and it's easier than it looks. The capacitors cost less than a buck a piece, so it may be worth a shot.

tick tock. Bought a refurbed Yamaha RX-A700 for $300 from Newegg, and I'm pretty happy so far.

Well, I discovered a work-around for a while, anyway.

I hooked up the cable box directly to the TV with HDMI. (That gave me all the HD channels I was missing.)

Then I ran an optical cable from the cable box to the receiver.

Then I fiddled around with the receiver remote until I discovered the correct input source. I found the sound on VCR/DVR.

I'm sure this too will eventually give out, but at least I bought some time. I appreciate everyone's input.
