I've heard quite a few different portable systems, seems like everyone in the family has a different setup. While there are obvious trade offs to any portable mp3 setup, the vast majority have abysmal sound quality.

The B&W Zeppelin is the best small form mp3 player I have heard, but isn't truly portable. The product above is very crisp on the voices and treble, and plays at a decent volume for an extended period of time. It's the only Bose product I would recommend, and is very overpriced. I think you can still demo it at Best Buy.

bought the dock and 4 wireless Audio Unlimiteds for outside. For the price I am very satified.

I use an altec lansing orbit. Its a small battery powered speaker that plugs into your headphone jack so it will work with any device.

It has great sound and pretty inexpensive (<$20 on Amazon). Its loud enough for use at a beach.

My wife gave me the Jawbone Jambox (Bluetooth capable).....and is really pretty good with the audio output.

IMO, nothing really compares to the Hardan Kardon HK-GO.....kind of overpriced (like all the BOSE products are)....but awesome sound.

Airplay is the shiznit, esp. if you own multiple Apple devices (any wifi enabled iPod, iPad, iPhone or Mac).

To me, Airplay is reason enough to get an AppleTV. Airplay changes the way I consume media. I don't know if there's an analogue on the Wintel platform (or Android platform) but dang... I loves me some Airplay.

In my house, I have an AppleTV and two Airport Express routers. My next portable speakers will be Airplay compatible. Bluetooth is kinda silly by comparison, at least if you want to use more than one device to play music.
