Does doing this cause your contract to "reset", even if you don't get a free/new phone?

NO, at least on mine each line has its own contract length. I suppose if you dropped the main line later, the added line would go to full price. I have 4 lines , the three add-ons are $9.99 each.

Yes if you already have the phone...just pay the $9.99/mo. If you get a "reduced priced" phone with them it will mean 2 more years.
