If you are given yield and ultimate strength?
Is shear strength the same as yield strength?

For steels, yield shear strength is .577 of the tensile yield strength and ultimate shear strength is .75 of the ultimate strength. Yield and shear strength are most certainly not the same thing.

Actually, the yield strength is based of the maximum shear stress (Tresca Criterion). But I understand what you're saying - tensile yield is not the same as yielding in shear.

You are probably looking at tensile yield values which can be related to the shear yield strength. The relationship is:

tau = 0.577 * Sy (Von Mises)
or
tau = 0.5 * Sy (Tresca)

This is only good for ductile materials.

clamp an object into a vice, and apply a one sided force parallel to the clamping force...

when it breaks, you've applied enough force.

I'll just ask my prof tomorrow. I have no idea what Tresca or Von Mises are. Thanks anyways

No, you're probably thinking of Lowery. I don't think he is teaching it the semester, but he is definitely one of the best profs in Civil.

I took CVEN twice. It is really easy once you understand it.

I didn't even have to memorize all of the stressed beam equations. They let me use the book. Mohr's circle is important now and will continue to be so in future classes.

Little Lee Lowery??? Is he still around? Had him in 74, great prof. Could actually teach and made material interesting. Will never forget: "you dont push with a rope". I don't remember the context of that but remember him saying it .

Lee Lowery IS teaching this semester, he teaches the CVEN 305 right before Schwartz teaches mine.

I understand it now, went in to see my prof and he really helped clear a couple of things up.

Dr. Lynn Beason was one of the best professors I had at A&M.

Had him for statics picked him for CVEN 305, and didn't miss a single 8 am class. Too bad your prof isn't using the book as a reference for the course. It's a pretty decent text.

Only if you want to learn conventions used in the 1950s and spend literally half of the lecture copying the homework as he writes it on the chalk (yes chalk) board.

Then you can have fun arguing with him on why he gave you a 65 instead of a 100 on a major exam because he didn't like the sub-characters you used in your resultant variables.

Oh then you can suffer the consequences in later classes, because Stubbs didn't cover 75% of the material you were meant to learn.

WTF? Why are you posting at 2:36? The final was from 1-3 today! I'm in your class as I believe Schwartz only has one section. No way you could have finished that whole final in an hour and a half.
