How long do you want to ignore this user?
Since I am WAY behind the the technology curve, I have to ask:

Is the best way to do this still the old fashioned way of hooking up a DVD player/recorder to the TV

OR

Is there a way of doing this by hooking the TV to my laptop with an HDMI cable? Would this require special software?

Thanks in advance for being helpful (and patient) with an ignorant old guy! :>

I've used a TV tuner card to get shows off the DVR and into my PC for recording. Essentially, you're substituting the PC w/ tuner card for the TV. Once you've got it saved on the PC, you can edit it, etc.

If you TiVo'd it just download and use TiVo Desktop.

Thanks, Walker. I was hoping something like that existed. And it's a free download, no less!

My experience is that Tivo Desktop provides a bad copy and a file that's sized for a handheld device. Is it better now?

Last I checked, TiVo Desktop's only problem now is that they haven't updated it for Windows 7

TiVo desktop will give you the same file thats on your TiVo. Are you saying they do bad conversions? I've had no reason do convert anything yet.
